Disappointing

MMD had a plethora of actors with great potential. It would have worked wonders had the elements of story and direction been better and had the director worked on the performances of the actors.

Synopsis: Motor Mitraan Di is the story of 3 brothers, Ravi (Happy), Rajveer (Ranjha) & Bhaji (Ghuggi) who run a motor workshop until one day Rajveer buys a bus. Thereafter, they drive a bus called ‘Motor Mitraan Di’. All is going well until one day, when they are carrying the disciples of Prabham Ashram run by Maharaj (Yograj Singh) & Swami Ji (Sardar Sohi). What follows next is a chaotic comedy of errors which has some deep dark secrets to be revealed towards the end.

Review: Director Amitoj Maan after a gap of almost 2.5 years after having made Haani & Gaddar – The Traitor with Harbhajan Maan in the lead. This time he has a plethora of actors filling the star cast in vital roles with Amitoj himself doing the writing part along side Waqas Quereshi.

First things first, the films plot moves on a very very thin story line. The story, screenplay & dialogues have been jointly written by Amitoj Maan & Waqas Quereshi. Seeing his earlier work, I have always been of the belief that Amitoj Maan is a very good & capable writer but it’s his direction where the actual question mark lies. I will come to that part later though. The film’s story as stated by the makers has been inspired from real incidents and is a very average affair. Probably for the first time, I’ve seen a story written by Amitoj Maan which is very weak.

The screenplay is very predictable. You can easily predict what is going to follow next except for just 1 particular thing which was the surprise element regarding the murder mystery and it was well maintained till the time it was revealed. Dialogues were stale and boring in many portions barring a few portions where there were enough laughs to make you sit till the end but that was of no use.

Coming to Amitoj’s direction, as i said earlier that he is a very good writer but there is a question mark over his direction. Even here, the story was weak and probably even the director knew about it. However, a director can still work things around and create a world where the things are believable but nothing in the film’s world was believable.

Few points worth noting can be: From going anywhere from Point A to Point B within Punjab would not take more than 12 hours to travel at maximum and the bhakts were travelling from 1 aashram to another and they spent over 18-20 hours on the journey and still did not reach the destination? Someone plays a CBI Inspector in the film and is revealed towards the end and I wasn’t convinced at all with the CBI angle. Nothing was shown or told about Maharaj’s back story or anything much to establish him. One second he is a powerful saint and another he is afraid of a ghost. Most of the things did not make sense at all.

Coming to performances, Gurpreet Ghuggi showed sincerity and seemed like a lone fighter fighting till the end and justifying his character and performance. Happy Raikoti improved from his stints in Darra & Teshan but still he needs to work a lot more than this effort. Ranjha Vikram Singh lacked expressions in the film. Maybe the director killed his character by not making him dub his own lines. Otherwise he is a very joyful person.

Sonia Maan as usual did not get a meaty role. Some might argue this line given the fact that the story revolves around her but she disappears after the opening appearance only to appear towards the pre-climax portions. Yograj Singh was not at al impressive. Sardar Sohi provided laughs and was all right. The actor playing Deepak was funny and did an all right job. Gurmeet Sajan had a 2-3 scene role in the middle and was effective although his character did not have anything to do with the main story line.

The camera work by Krishna Ramanan was effective in some scenes whereas shady in others. He always does a mixed job with the camera work in whatever of the work I’ve seen of his. Background Score was really missing the point in the film. MMD had it’s moments from the scene just before the Interval till the time the murder mystery is revealed. Those 20-25 minutes were very entertaining but they had nothing to do with the main story line at all. The music of the film fails to impress at all.

MMD had a plethora of actors with great potential. It would have worked wonders had the elements of story and direction been better and had the director worked on the performances of the actors.
