Review: Vikram Pradhan makes his debut in Punjabi Cinema with this film which gives the hint of a laugh riot from the trailer. But to the honest, the director who has also written the story and screenplay seemed confused to weather make the film an out and out comedy, an emotional drama, a romantic film and guess what, the Director also adds a pinchful flavour of Thrill element also into the film.

The story of the film has been written by the director Vikram Pradhan himself. The plot of the film might have sounded interesting because when I break down the story of the film into 4-5 lines, even I find potential and interest in the plot. However, the screenplay written jointly by Jatinder Lall & Vikram Pradhan spoils the party. They have together made a mess of what could have been a very good story backed by a gripping screenplay but could not. All they could do was get “inspired” by some cliched filmy sequences from here & there and tried to recreate those moments into this film, which my dear friends did not look pleasing at all.

Coming to dialogues, Jatinder Lall won the award for Best Dialogues for Sardaarji a few years back. To be honest, I have not seen his level rise above that work 2-3 years down the line. He is still stuck in that zone and has failed to innovate his writing post Sardaarji. The punches in the film, were very few and the amount of laughter generated on those punches was even lesser. Overall, the screenplay and dialogues let down what could have turned out to be a decent film.

Director Vikram, Pradhan, who makes his debut in Punjabi Cinema with Sat Shri Akaal England has a lot to ponder about when he looks back at the film now that it has released. He has only one man to blame – Vikram Pradhan Himself. The story written by him was good but come the screenplay, come the treatment, he couldn’t decide which way to head with the film. I mean you get Ammy Virk, Karamjit Anmol, Monica Gill, Shooting Locations in London, Music by Jatinder Shah, Jatinder Lall as Dialogue Writer, Flashy Budgets. Pradhan could not have asked for more to make his debut in Punjabi Cinema. But he has a lot to look behind and sort out before he makes his next film.

Coming to performances, Ammy Virk tries tries and tries to save the film from falling apart. He was the apt choice to play Major German Singh Maan. If I make comparisons between this film and cricket, Ammy Virk played an innings like Dhoni played against Pakistan in December 2013 where it was Dhoni v/s the Opposition. Ammy did a great job and tried to save the film but got no support from the other end. Monica Gill, had the same expressions throughout the film and did a very very okay job to be fair. She has done way better in some of her previous films like Sardaarji 2 and Ambarsariya.

Karamjit Anmol has his 5th release in a span of 61 Days. He has really capitalised on his popularity. But now that he is in demand, he should do roles which have something new to offer. He is a very versatile actor, but needs to capitalise on that part soon. Sardar Sohi was all right. Harby Sangha tried to make us laugh in his 3-4 scenes. Jarnail Singh delivered a good performance. I want to see him doing big roles more often now and not the cameos which he has been doing for a long time. Jasneil Gill as Mithu was all right. Gurmeet Sajan, Gurpreet Bhangu, Malkit Rauni, Prakash Gadhu were all right in their very very small roles.

Music is another big letdown by Jatinder Shah. Except for Jatt Da Kaleja, nothing is good in the album of Sat Shri Akaal England. Now people will ask me that why did I not name Jyoti Nooran’s Gal Theek Nai as my pick. Well, it seems like Jatinder Shah has not heard Jinde Meriye from Qissa Punjab also by Jyoti and Sultana Nooran, which was composed by Gurmoh. Okay, I will stop here.

Overall, Sat Shri Akaal England is a king-sized disappointment for the audience who have been wanting to watch a decent Punjabi film for over 2 months now. Looks like they will have to wait for next year now.
