To the likes of a plethora of fans of the Punjabi film industry, the trailer of Punjabi movie ‘Nankana’ has released in the morning. The movie marks the comeback of Gurdas Maan on the silver screen after a hiatus of four years. A comeback of a legendary name such as his is bound to generate a feeling of jollification amongst his fans.
Originally, the movie was slated to release in April this year. However, frequent delays have now postponed its release to July 6. Nankana has been directed by Manjeet Maan. In which is her third directorial venture, it has come after four years, the previous one being ‘Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar’.
As the name suggests, ‘Nankana – Above The Religion’ is a movie which seems to oppose the radical views of a section of the society towards an individual who thinks otherwise. To an extent, the topic might appear the need of the hour for such radical thinking is undoubtedly present in our modern contemporary society and surely needs to be eliminated.
Having said that, the way in which the topic has been portrayed seems repetitious to the core. It might become a case of watching an already-recited story on the big screen. For Gurdas Maan, someone who has done such roles and movies in the past, some scenes look supremely humdrum, something which can work against the movie at the box-office as you can’t expect audiences to turn up to the cinema halls to watch an unvarying story.
Gurdas Maan’s character as Boota Singh in Manoj Punj’s ‘Shaheed-e-Mohabbat’ (1999) had similar nuances which are visible in the trailer of Nankana. The fact of the matter is that audiences and their taste has changed and matured over the years. Not stating that the movie is a replica but portraying the same traits after 19 years doesn’t seem to be a great idea.
Another factor which might not work in the favour of the movie is the delay in releasing the trailer. With a mere three weeks left in the release of the movie, questions on the promotions of the movie are bound to be asked. A short span of three weeks might not be enough to promote the movie in the best possible manner.
Apart from Gurdas Maan, the movie stars Kavita Kaushik, Anas Rashid, Tarsem Paul, Gurmeet Saajan and others. The movie also marks the debut of renowned music director Jatinder Shah as a producer under the banner of Shah An Shah Pictures.
