India will invariably miss Sridevi ji

“The trouble is you think you have time” – Buddha

“Sridevi” – A name that needs no introduction. Crowned as the first female superstar of Bollywood, Sridevi passed away on 24-02-2018 in Dubai after accidental drowning. Sridevi was in Dubai to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah’s wedding along with her husband Boney Kapoor and younger daughter Khushi Kapoor.

In a career which lasted over five decades and 300 films, she made her special place not only in the film industry, but also in the hearts of her fans. Sridevi was born on 13-08-1963 in Madras and started her acting career at a tender age of 4 in MA Thirumugam’s ‘Thunaivan’. She continued to act in Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam and Kannada films.

She made her debut in Bollywood as a child artist in the 1975-movie, Julie’. Her first lead role was at the age of 13 Tamil film ‘Moondru Mudichu’ (1976). Her notable films in Tamil and Telegu were ’16 Vayathinile’ (1977), ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’ (1978), ‘Varumayin Niram Sivappu’ (1980), ‘Meendum Kokila’ (1981), ‘Premabhishekam’ (1981), ‘Moondram Pirai’ (1982), ‘Aakhari Poratam’ (1988), ‘Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari’ (1990) and ‘Kshana Kshanam’ (1991).

She made her debut in Bollywood with ‘Solva Sawan’ (1979), but it was not until ‘Himmatwala’ (1983) that she gained attention. Her memorable roles included ‘Mawaali’ (1983), ‘Tohfa’ (1984), ‘Naya Kadam’ (1984), ‘Maqsad’ (1984), ‘Masterji’ (1985), ‘Nazrana’ (1987), ‘Mr. India’ (1987), ‘Waqt Ki Awaz’ (1988), ‘Chandni’ (1989), ‘Sadma’ (1983), ‘Nagina’ (1986), ‘ChaalBaaz’ (1989), ‘Lamhe’ (1991), Khuda Gawah’ (1992), ‘Gumrah’ (1993), ‘Laadla’ (1994) and ‘Judaai’ (1997). She made a strong comeback to film acting after a decade and a half in 2012-movie ‘English Vinglish’. Ravi Udyawar’s ‘Mom’, which had released last year was her 300th film. As had been the response for the most part of her career, she received critical acclaim for her role in Mom as well.

She fell in love with film producer Boney Kapoor on the sets of Judaai (1997) and the couple decided to get married the same year. They have two daughters Khushi Kapoor and Jahnvi Kapoor. Known for her impeccable comic timing and incredible dance moves, Sridevi ruled the box office in 80’s and 90’s. Her dance number ‘Nainon Mein Sapna’ and ‘Hawa Hawai’ will be remembered for the times to come.

Filmfare described her truly a goddess in a blue sari in ‘Kaate Nahi Kat Te’. She was successfully paired opposite Jeetendra and the pair did 16 films together, out of which most were successful. She made a super-hit pair with Anil Kapoor, who later on became her brother-in-law.

In her entire career, Filmfare awarded her for Best Actress award five times. She was awarded the Filmfare Power Award in 2013. She was awarded India’s fourth highest civilian, Padam Shri Award, from the Government of India. The legendary actress may no longer be amongst us but she would be remembered for her talent and for all the memorable roles which she has delivered in her five-decade long career. The void created by her sudden demise would remain so in the hearts of her fans. They will still have an opportunity to witness their icon on screen in Anand L. Rai’s ‘Zero’, which will release later this year. Sridevi has played a cameo role in the movie.
