Daaka Movie News: The writer, producer and actor talked about recreating ‘Phulkari’ and how he struggled hard to find the mask used in the movie.
Gippy Grewal might be working in numerous capacities in the Punjabi film industry today. But it was the singer in him which laid the foundation for him to switch departments. Among Grewal’s plentiful super-hit songs, ‘Phulkari’ deserves a special mention for it was the song which almost changed his life back in the day.
In his upcoming movie titled ‘Daaka‘, the writer, producer, actor and singer decided to recreate the song. While there were rumours of the song getting recreated in one of his other movies this year, it eventually happened in Daaka.
“Daaka has been produced by T-Series and Humble [Motion Pictures – home production]. We didn’t have the rights of Phulkari, they were with T-Series. Had I wanted to recreate it any other movie, I would have to request Bhushan [Kumar] for the same.
“Since this movie is shot in a village and talks about the village culture, I also thought that Phulkari would suit better over here,” Grewal was quoted as saying to Punjabi Mania on what made him recreate the song in Daaka.
Daaka Movie News: “I struggled a lot for the mask” – Gippy Grewal
Grewal, who will be attempting a robbery in the movie, will be seen donning a mask while performing the infamous act. Right from the release of the teaser, the mask is receiving numerous praises for suiting Grewal’s face. Being asked about the selection of the mask, Grewal shared an intriguing story.
“I struggled a lot for that mask. Actually, that mask was bought by my younger son Ekam for Halloween in Canada. I just tried it once and it suited me. I had sent a Snapchat [story] to Baljit [Singh Deo] bhaji. Daaka was in the pipeline then but I told him to use it in the movie.

“When we were ready to start the shooting, he sent me the same story again and told me that it’s time to use that mask. But I had lost the mask by then. So, I went to every Halloween shop in Canada and America and showed them the video of the mask. But I didn’t find it anywhere.
“I came back home and started an extensive search for the mask. Ekam, Shinda [son] and my wife were also searching for it. It was in the evening that I came home from somewhere that Shinda was wearing that mask. Since we had only one mask, we handled it with care. Whenever I used to remove the mask on the set, two people would be there to keep it back properly,” Grewal said.
