Diljit Dosanjh to Be the Focus of Canada’s First University Course on a Punjabi Artist at TMU

In a landmark moment for South Asian representation in academia, Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) Creative School has announced Canada’s first university-level course dedicated entirely to Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh. The announcement was made at the Billboard Summit during NXNE 2025, sending waves of excitement through fans, students, and cultural scholars alike.

Set to launch in Fall 2026, the course will delve deep into Dosanjh’s musical journey, cultural impact, and the global resonance of Punjabi music. It will explore how his innovative sounds and lyrics have influenced not only Indian pop music but also energized diasporic communities around the world, particularly across North America.

“This is the first time a North American university will offer a full course centered on a Punjabi artist,” said Dr. Charlie Wall-Andrews, who is involved in curating the syllabus. “Diljit is more than a musician—he’s a cultural force, a bridge between regional identity and global pop culture.”
