Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who is currently serving as a commentator for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, has come under fire after making a controversial remark during the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) vs Rajasthan Royals (RR) match. While commentating, Harbhajan used the term "kaali taxi" (black taxi) in reference to English pacer Jofra Archer, which has sparked outrage across social media.
During the match, Harbhajan was heard saying, "London me kaali taxi ka meter tez bhaagta hai, Aur yaha pe Archer sahab ka meter bhi tez bhaaga hai," which roughly translates to, "Like the meter of London's black taxis, Archer's meter has also been on the higher side." The comment, intended as a lighthearted analogy, was met with swift backlash for its racial connotation.
Having himself faced racial discrimination during his playing career, Harbhajan's remark was especially surprising to many, leading to widespread criticism. Fans and social media users quickly took to platforms demanding either an apology or an explanation from the former cricketer.
As of now, Harbhajan Singh has not responded to the growing criticism. The incident has once again ignited discussions around racism and the responsibility of commentators to maintain sensitivity while on air.
