In a major milestone for regional music, Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma has stormed into YouTube’s top-10 most popular singers list, securing the 7th spot globally with an impressive 13.28 crore views in just one week. The feat places him ahead of musical giants such as Honey Singh (ranked 13), AR Rahman (ranked 17), and Sonu Nigam, marking a remarkable achievement for Haryana’s local music scene.
The latest YouTube rankings, one of the most-watched music metrics globally under Google, show that Alka Yagnik continues to hold the top spot, followed by Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu. Yet, the surprise entry of Masoom Sharma has taken both fans and industry watchers by storm.
From Controversy to Stardom
Masoom Sharma's name became widely known earlier this year when several of his songs were banned by the government for allegedly promoting gun culture in Haryana. Among 30 songs removed from YouTube, 10 belonged to Masoom Sharma. On March 13, he went live on social media to share his side of the story, and what followed was an outpouring of public support that catapulted him to national attention.
Since then, his popularity has soared. His songs, including some of the banned ones, have gone viral not only in India but globally. In a testament to his rising fame, three of his tracks have trended on Billboard's international music charts, a rare achievement for any regional Indian artist.
Expanding Fan Base and Political Recognition
Sharma’s fan base has expanded beyond Haryana, with live concerts now being held in Chandigarh, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. His appeal lies in the raw, folk-inspired Haryanvi sound combined with relatable lyrics that connect deeply with the youth.
His influence was also recognized at the political level. During a state-level celebration of Lord Parshuram Jayanti at Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula on April 27, Haryana Chief Minister Naib Saini praised Masoom Sharma on stage. Calling him “a true Haryanvi artist,” Saini said, “When his songs play, people can’t resist getting up and dancing.”
Redefining the Haryanvi Music Scene
Masoom Sharma's entry into the global music charts has not only elevated his own career but has also drawn attention to the underrated Haryanvi music industry, traditionally overshadowed by Punjabi and Bollywood music. His meteoric rise is being hailed as a defining moment that could usher in a new era for regional artists, giving them a global platform.
From controversy to Billboard, Masoom Sharma’s journey reflects the power of regional voices breaking into the mainstream, and his latest YouTube feat cements his place as one of the most influential Haryanvi artists of this generation.
