Honsla Rakh review

'Honsla Rakh' is essentially a movie about a father-son duo of Yenky Singh (Diljit Dosanjh) and Honsla Singh (Shinda Grewal) finding a wife and mother for themselves respectively. A restaurant owner in Vancouver, Yenky raises Honsla as a single parent after his divorce with Sweety (Shehnaaz Kaur Gill).

Considering how Dosanjh gets his comic timing on point from the word go, he appears to have taken a lesson or two out of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 chapter of former India batter Virender Sehwag's book of starting well. Dosanjh's comic timing in accordance with writer Rakesh Dhawan's script doesn't waste time first up and hint at what the audiences should expect from the movie.

A swift sneak peak into the lives of Yenky and Honsla highlights how raising a child can be an onerous task for a single parent especially a father and how the society generally undervalues the presence of a mother. Although most of this is conveyed in the presence of jocularity, one doesn't have to be a genius to scrape beneath.

Dosanjh, who also makes his debut as a producer with Honsla Rakh, emerges as a focal point not just because of his effortless ability to be amusing on-screen but also because of his presence in almost each and every scene of the movie.

A primary reason why Dosanjh excels as Yenky in Honsla Rakh is because such a character forms part of an archetype comfort zone for him; makes him be at home. While a soft corner for this genre always helps, one can't deny the fact that he has developed his own unique way of portraying such comical characters. Grewal, on the other hand, will once again leave you open-mouthed with his potential. Part of some scenes which are of paramount importance to the movie, it is simply amazing how the child actor seldom lets the guard of his emotions down.

While one had expected Gill to have more screentime than what she eventually has in Honsla Rakh, Dosanjh and Sonam Bajwa (Jasmine) hit off with their chemistry. Bajwa, who plays a Yoga teacher in the movie, has registered yet another assured performance.

Having said that, the start of the second half witnesses Yenky making desperate efforts to both impress Jasmine and make people laugh. Unfortunately for him and the movie, neither works. In what is the weakest part of Honsla Rakh, it also involves stalking being used as tool to woo a girl.

Dhawan, who is also guilty of writing jokes on obesity in the first half, could have done much better as far as these two sequences are concerned. If truth be hold, it is high time that both Punjabi writers and audiences pull up their socks with respect to writing jokes around and laughing on such serious issues for it doesn't speak highly about their intellect.

Returning to the positives, the first-time pairing of director-DOP Amarjit Singh Saron and Baljit Singh Deo has a beneficial effect on the movie. While Saron comes out putting on display his third enjoyable movie in a row, Deo deserves approbation for using his more than a decade-long experience for the best interests of Honsla Rakh.

As a producer alongside Daljit Thind, Dosanjh leaves no stone unturned in their endeavour to increase the production value of the movie. While Dosanjh uses a title of his recently released song 'Vibe' multiple times in the movie, it is his 2014-released song named 'This Singh Is So Stylish' which holds true in Honsla Rakh. In fact, not just restricted to Dosanjh, the style and glamour quotient is so contagious that all actors benefit from it. It is rare that one mentions about the costume designers in a movie review but Singh Studios (Mooney Singh and Tanya Singh) have done a fabulous job in Honsla Rakh.

It is also rare that one talks about audiences' reaction to a movie but it was quite evident that the near-housefull hall was having a ball watching Honsla Rakh. Since the re-opening of cinemas after the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic, I haven't been part of an audience which has enjoyed itself to the extent that it did while watching Honsla Rakh.
