The Punjab State Women Commission has initiated action against Punjabi music artists Karan Aujla and Yo Yo Honey Singh after receiving complaints about inappropriate language directed toward women in two of their songs currently circulating online.
The Commission, under the authority granted by Section 12 of the Punjab State Women Commission Act, 2001, has taken suo moto cognizance of the issue. It flagged Karan Aujla’s song “MF GABRU” and Yo Yo Honey Singh’s track “MILLIONAIRE”, both of which have recently gained attention for lyrics that the Commission deems offensive and disrespectful toward women.
In official communications sent to the Punjab Police Headquarters in Chandigarh, the Commission has instructed that a senior officer be assigned to conduct a thorough inquiry. Authorities have been asked to ensure lawful action is taken without delay and to file a status report on the investigation.
As part of the proceedings, Karan Aujla has been summoned to appear before the Commission on August 11 at 11:00 AM, followed by Yo Yo Honey Singh at 11:30 AM the same day. Both are expected to respond to the concerns and explain the intent and context behind the controversial lyrics.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to upholding the dignity, safety, and rights of women, stating that any attempt to undermine these values in public content would not be taken lightly.
"This is not just about songs, it’s about the kind of message we allow to spread in society," said a Commission spokesperson. "Artists have a platform and a responsibility. Misogyny disguised as music will not be tolerated."
The move has sparked fresh debate on freedom of expression versus social responsibility in entertainment, with opinions divided across fan communities and civil society.
