As the demand for the release of Punjab 95 grows louder, actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh has once again stirred emotions by sharing a powerful still from the film on social media. In the image, Dosanjh is seen hanging by his wrists, bloodied and bruised, a chilling depiction of the torture endured by Jaswant Singh Khalra, the slain human rights activist whose life the film is based on.
Dosanjh offered a raw glimpse into the physical and emotional depth he has poured into portraying Khalra, a man who uncovered thousands of unaccounted cremations of Sikhs in Punjab during the 1990s and was subsequently abducted and murdered.
The image, set against a grimy brick wall with low lighting, reflects the dark and tortured reality of Khalra’s illegal detention and suffering. Dosanjh’s transformation, complete with unkempt hair, tattered clothes, and haunting expression, has left fans shaken and reflective.
Punjab 95, produced by Ronnie Screwvala and directed by Honey Trehan, has faced repeated delays and censorship hurdles since its announcement. The film, which was scheduled to premiere at global film festivals, has been awaiting clearance from the Indian authorities. Despite its critical importance and growing global attention, the release in India remains uncertain.
Many in the film and human rights community have come out in support of the project. With each new post, Diljit Dosanjh continues to remind the public of the real story that deserves to be told, a story of truth, sacrifice, and justice.
As Punjab 95 remains under scrutiny, the haunting image shared by Dosanjh adds fuel to a growing chorus demanding the film’s release and recognition of Jaswant Singh Khalra’s legacy.
