R Nait and Gurlez Akhtar's Song ‘315’ Sparks Row Over Gangster Glorification; Complaint Filed

0% Liked

The release of Punjabi singers R Nait and Gurlez Akhtar’s track “315” has triggered a fresh controversy in Punjab, as it comes amid the state government’s ongoing clampdown on music content that promotes gangster culture and weapon display.

The song, launched around two weeks ago, features explicit visuals of firearms and projects a hardened gangster persona, in direct contradiction to official directives issued to artists. In the video, Punjabi model and self-styled social worker Bhaana Sidhu is seen brandishing weapons, raising concerns over its potential influence on impressionable audiences.

The lyrics reference “1980 di jammi 315,” alluding to a type of gun, which critics say glamorizes violence. Despite the backlash, the music video has already garnered over 3.7 million views on YouTube, reflecting its rapid spread online.

Formal Complaint Lodged

Arvind Sharma, Deputy Convener of the BJP Punjab Trade Cell, has lodged a formal complaint with Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, urging immediate action against the song. In his letter, also marked to the AIG Intelligence, Sharma called on Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to crack down on music that promotes illegal weapons and glorifies crime.

Sharma argued that “315” represents a “blatant violation” of the state’s guidelines for artists, warning that such content could worsen law-and-order challenges. “These songs don’t just entertain — they shape perceptions and can normalize a culture of fear and violence,” he said.

Government’s Zero-Tolerance Policy

The Punjab government has repeatedly stated it will not tolerate gangster glorification in any form. CM Mann has used multiple platforms to urge artists to produce content that inspires unity and conveys positive messages, rather than glorifying crime or bloodshed. Authorities have maintained that they are actively monitoring such cases, and artists have been warned against including harmful depictions in their work.

This incident adds to a growing list of controversies over Punjabi music videos that critics say have become a breeding ground for the glorification of gang life, despite public pledges to curb the trend.
