Controversy has arisen over Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi’s recent kirtan performance at a religious gathering, prompting a statement from Sikh authorities.
Acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, clarified that kirtan in the presence of Guru Sahib should only be performed by devout Sikhs who follow the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Gargaj said that allowing someone who does not strictly adhere to Sikh principles to perform kirtan is inconsistent with religious guidelines.
“The rights and practices surrounding kirtan are clearly defined, and traditions must be respected at all religious functions,” the Jathedar stated, emphasizing that any breach could be considered a violation of Sikh practices.
The performance video quickly circulated online, generating mixed responses. Many fans appreciated Jassi’s rendition as a celebration of Sikh devotional music and culture, while some religious leaders and scholars reiterated the importance of following traditional protocols to preserve the sanctity of kirtan.
The incident has sparked wider discussion within the Sikh community about upholding religious standards while engaging with modern cultural expressions.
