Set against the backdrop of the early 20th century, the film explores the lives of Sikh immigrants in Canada during a time marked by discrimination, unequal wages and social alienation. Through a mix of drama, emotion and light humour, the narrative also touches upon issues such as women’s rights, identity struggles and anti-Asian prejudice.

At its heart, the story follows Chhalla, a young man from Punjab who travels to Canada in search of work and a better future.
