Chandigarh: Punjabi singer Babbu Maan has chosen not to support the ongoing Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest, raising questions about the movement and expressing concern over the repeated expectation that Punjabis should stand at the forefront of every national agitation.
Speaking on the issue, Maan said Punjab has already made immense sacrifices throughout the country's history—from the Partition of 1947 to the events of 1984 and the prolonged farmers' movement. He remarked that the people of Punjab cannot be expected to bear the burden of every protest, particularly without understanding the background and leadership of the campaign.
The singer also questioned the role of CJP founder Abhijeet Deepke during the farmers' protest that drew nationwide attention in 2020. According to Maan, if the present leadership did not stand with Punjab's farmers during that critical period, it is reasonable to ask why Punjabis should now be expected to extend unconditional support to their movement.
Babbu Maan maintained that every citizen has the right to protest democratically, but public support should not be offered blindly. He stressed that people must first evaluate the credibility, intentions, and objectives of any organisation before associating themselves with its cause.
His remarks have sparked discussion on social media, with supporters backing his call for careful assessment of protest movements, while others criticised his refusal to support the students' agitation.
Maan's comments stand in contrast to the views expressed by several other Punjabi celebrities, including Diljit Dosanjh, Sonu Sood, Jasbir Jassi, and Sonam Bajwa, who have voiced concern over the police action against students and appealed for dialogue rather than confrontation.
As the CJP protest continues to attract national attention, differing opinions within Punjab's entertainment industry have highlighted the broader debate over public participation in protest movements and the responsibilities of influential public figures.
