Nana Patekar Death: The final hours of veteran actor Nana Patekar’s life began with a brief message to a friend saying he was unwell, followed by a frantic effort to get medical help at his Goa residence.
Patekar, 75, was staying at his apartment in Dona Paula with a caretaker when he reportedly contacted a friend at around 3.30 am on Thursday. The message raised concern, and the friend travelled to the actor’s residence after seeing it.
When help arrived, Patekar was found unconscious. His caretaker contacted medical authorities, prompting an ambulance to be sent to the apartment. The hospital was only a short distance away, allowing emergency medical care to begin before he reached the facility.
Doctors at the hospital continued resuscitation efforts after Patekar was brought in. Medical staff reportedly administered CPR for about 45 minutes, but the actor did not respond to treatment. He was declared dead at approximately 5.10 am.
Doctors have indicated that Patekar was suspected to have suffered a cardiac event, although the precise cause of death will be established through a postmortem examination. His body has been taken to Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim, while authorities have registered a medico-legal case.
The circumstances surrounding his death have cast a sudden shadow over the film industry, particularly given that Patekar had remained an influential presence in Indian cinema for decades.
Born Vishwanath Patekar, the actor developed a reputation for performances marked by intensity and emotional depth. He worked in both Hindi and Marathi cinema and built a diverse filmography that included critically acclaimed dramas as well as mainstream entertainers.
His notable credits include Parinda, Prahaar: The Final Act, Tirangaa, Krantiveer and Khamoshi: The Musical. His performances earned him three National Film Awards, along with honours at the Filmfare and Maharashtra State Film Awards.
Patekar was also among the recipients of the Padma Shri, recognising his contribution to Indian cinema.
For audiences, his appeal lay in a distinctive acting style that could make even a brief scene memorable. His commanding voice, restrained mannerisms and ability to portray troubled or uncompromising characters helped establish him as one of the industry's most recognisable performers.
His death now leaves behind a body of work spanning generations, with colleagues and admirers remembering an actor whose screen presence remained difficult to replicate.
