Box Office Report of Punjabi movie, Kaptaan, starring Gippy Grewal, Monica Gill and Karishma Kotak. Directed by Mandeep Kumar.
First Day First Show
Kaptaan has opened to a lukewarm response at the Box office. It’s nowhere near to the occupancies of earlier films released in the year like Ambarsariya, Ardaas, Love Punjab. All 3 of these films opened to packed houses all over East Punjab as well as other parts of India. However, heading into 1st Day Kaptaan didn’t have much buzz around it and it was going to rely on heavy word of mouth which seems to be going into the favour of the film. Most of the general public has accepted the film which seems to be a positive sign for the film.
Day 1
Friday, May 20
Kaptaan didn’t have much buzz going into release on May 20th, therefore it failed to register good numbers at the Box Office anywhere in East Punjab. The occupancies in the areas like Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Mohali and Chandigarh were somewhat okay but in areas like Amritsar, Bathinda the response was dismal. Other B & C centres also recorded good to average occupancies.
The Day 1 net collections of Kaptaan are:
East Punjab – Rs. 43,00,000/-
Delhi – Rs. 3,00,000/-
Total – Rs. 46,00,000/-
Seeing the numbers it has collected on Day 1, it will be a very uphill task for Kaptaan to put up respectable weekend figures, however as the film is gaining appreciation with every passing minute, it should be able to put up decent numbers on Saturday and Sunday. The occupancies at the time of writing this report are better on Saturday in some key A Centre Properties.
Day 2
Saturday, May 21
Kaptaan received a positive word of mouth and a good response from the critics all over. However Kaptaan failed to collect the numbers at the Box Office which it badly needed in order to have a chance of recovering its costs at the Box Office. However, we will still not rule out the chance of Kaptaan at the Box Office given the fact that Overseas numbers are yet to arrive tomorrow evening.
However, as of Day 2 the collections of Kaptaan are:
East Punjab Rs. 50,00,000
Delhi Rs. 4,00,000
2 Day Total – (54,00,000+46,00,00 = Rs. 1,00,00,000)
Given that today is a Sunday, if Kaptaan manages to have a growth of around 40% and makes it to another 70-75 lacs then 1.75 crores would be a decent number and it will have a slight chance of recovery. Let’s hope the audience turns up in huge numbers on Sunday.

Day 3
Sunday, May 22
Day 3, being a Sunday saw a jump of around 40 percent in Box office figures for Kaptaan. However this wasn’t enough for Kaptaan to enter into Top 10 weekend openings. The film has got an average response for first week.

Delhi/UP: Rs. 5,60,000
3 Day Total: 1,74,60,000
