The information and broadcasting ministry on Thursday has decided against the release of controversial Punjabi movie that allegedly glorifies the assassins of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Earlier on Thursday, the Union home ministry had expressed its reservations on the contents of the film “Kaum de Heere”.
The ministry had asked the information and broadcasting ministry to take relook at clearance given to it.
Recently, the Intelligence Bureau had also alerted the home ministry that the the movie could could trigger communal tension between Hindus and Sikhs if it is released.
The BJP also demanded a ban on the movie.
According to PTI, Punjab BJP leader Lakshmi Kanta Chawla had written a letter to home minister Rajnath Singh asking him to stop the release of the movie, three days before its release. Chawla, who has been a health minister of Punjab, wrote to Singh, saying a ban on “Kaum de Heere” is important for maintaining peace and communal harmony in Punjab.
The Punjab Youth Congress also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi a few days ago, requesting ban on the film.
The movie is said to be based on the lives of Indira Gandhi’s assassin — Kehar Singh, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh. Incidentally, all the three have been given the status of “martyrs” by the Akal Takht Sahib. The film was banned earlier this year and could not get a censor board clearance as well.
Controversial censor board CEO Rakesh Kumar cleared the movie in June after allegedly accepting a bribe, the CBI said. Currently Kumar is under CBI’s custody. Courtesy: TOI
