Chann Pardesi: Re-release of Punjabi epic opens window of opportunity for everyone

Chann Pardesi: The Punjabi movie of a legendary status will be re-releasing in cinema halls on May 20.

While the trend of blockbuster movies being recreated with contemporary technology isn't a new one in the showbiz but the same happening is still quite rare in the Punjabi film industry.

Originally released in 1980, a Punjabi movie named 'Chann Pardesi' was successful in achieving the status of a legendary movie. Chann Pardesi was approved by one and all in times when Punjabi movies were few and far between.

While speaking in a hindsight of 40 years is always an easy task, one is sure that audiences of those times would've spoken very highly of the cast of the movie even before watching it. For the unversed, Chann Pardesi comprised of Raj Babbar, Amrish Puri, Om Puri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Rama Vij, Mehar Mittal, Sushma Seth, Rajni Sharma and Sunita Dhir in pivotal roles.

A small example regarding the cult status of Chann Pardesi can be judged by the fact that even a recently released Punjabi movie titled 'Main Te Bapu' had a reference of Sunita Dhir's character from this epic movie. In what was Dhir's debut movie, people continue to remember her from a role she had played over four decades ago.

London-based businessman Dr. Chanan Singh Sidhu and his son Simran Sidhu have bought the rights of re-releasing the movie across the world. Chann Pardesi will now be released in HD Digital and 5.1 Surround Sound.

It is noteworthy that the Sidhu father-son had initially wanted to release the refurbished movie on its 40th anniversary, i.e., a couple of years ago in 2020. However, even Chann Pardesi faced the brunt of COVID-19 pandemic.

Among the six Punjabi movies to release this month, the re-release of Chann Pardesi provides an occasional opportunity for fans across generations to watch this masterpiece on May 20. While senior citizens have a chance of visiting the cinema halls to relive their old days, millenials and individuals younger to them have a golden chance of watching such a movie with modern-day tech in the cinema halls.
