To create awareness about the availability of legal services for poor and marginalized segments of the society, Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, S.J. Vazifdar, also the Patron-in-Chief of State Legal Services Authorities, flagged off “The Walk”, today from the High Court building to Sukhna Lake.
Justice A.K. Mittal, Justice Surya Kant and Justice T.P.S. Mann, Executive Chairman, Punjab State Legal Services Authority also joined the Chief Justice on the occasion. Also, the judicial officers from Mohali, Panchkula and Chandigarh, advocates, students and para legal volunteers participated in the event.
The students of Chandigarh University Gharuan, Rayat & Bahra University Kharar, Universal Law College, Lalru and other senior officers of SAS Nagar also participated in the walk.
The participants held placards conveying the message of free legal services as well as the contact details of the concerned authorities to avail these services.
Notably, November 9 is observed as the “Legal Services Day” in the country.
The Walk was the part of nationwide campaign week “Connecting to Serve”, started by National Legal Services Authority, New Delhi from November 9 to 18, 2017 to make the targeted sections of people aware about Legal Services Clinics, Front offices and legal aid help line numbers. Its other objective is to identify people who are in need of legal assistance but have not taken recourse to justice delivery system on account of economic or other disability.
As part of this campaign, the para legal volunteers, students, panel Lawyers are also conducting door to door campaign giving information about legal services to the villages and enquiring about the grievance faced by them, if any. The same would be ultimately redressed by holding the camps during this campaign.
