Dakuaan Da Munda 2 Movie Review

"Vichaare eh munde raajneeti de hathe charh gaye..." [These boys have lost their lives to politics]

Without going into the semantics, two politicians discuss how politics takes undue advantage of youngsters. To a large extent, this particular line in the most recently released Punjabi movie titled 'Dakuaan Da Munda 2' sums up the gangway of rookies in the dreaded world of gangsters and crime.

While Dakuaan Da Munda 2 is essentially based on drug addiction and its repercussions, the adjoining criminal world can't be ignored because of the interconnection between the two.

We are told that protagonist Manga Singh Antal (Dev Kharoud) would've been a national Volleyball player had he not diverted from his path in life. This diversion isn't just diverting to any other sport or aim in life but diverting to drugs, despoiling and defrauding.

Antal and his friends are regular college going students but wrath and indignation of that age finds them locking horns with the redoubtable. One thing leads to another and before anyone realizes, their lives are surrounded by distressed, depraved and degenerated state of affairs.

Other than this phase, Dakuaan Da Munda 2 also highlights Antal's married life. In fact, the movie frequently travels to-and-fro between these two phases. Story within a story, flashbacks and sequences are connected brilliantly with each other to put on display an atypical but effective narrative.

Working only in his second movie, screenplay writer Narinder Ambersaria joins hands with editor Omkar Nath Bhakri to execute something unconventional. A small example of the same is Kharoud's goosebumps-generating introduction scene in the movie.

Considering how well Kharoud had performed in 'Dakuaan Da Munda' (2018), Dakuaan Da Munda 2 was bound to revolve around him especially in the build-up to the movie. It is true that we use the term "career-best" lightly nowadays but Kharoud provides enough hints of surpassing his previous best performance.

Director Mandeep Benipal, who had directed the first part as well, teams up with Kharoud for the fifth time to not only bring off an inspiring story but also ensures that two movies with similar backdrops don't look similar on the silver screen.

Another coup in Kharoud's career comes in the form of best scenes in Dakuaan Da Munda 2 which are also the most painful (not literally) and uncomfortable for the viewers. Kharoud pulls off the role of a drug addict depicting both the desperation of consuming a substance or injecting oneself and the satisfaction of killing that urge to a tee. Sequences shot in the rehabilitation centre not only come along as icying on the cake in an already solid second half but have it in them to be remembered for a long time.

Having said that, it is only after watching the movie that you realize that Dakuaan Da Munda 2 has more contributions in the acting department than just Kharoud. Japji Khaira (Amrit), Antal's girlfriend-turned-wife, excels in achieving supreme form in the movie. Khaira, who has been around in the Punjabi film industry for a decade-and-a-half now, doesn't let go of this opportunity of performing on the celluloid in real sense. Been offered a role with plentiful potential, Khaira's portrayal of a helpless wife of an outright drug abuser is right up there in her filmography.

Raj Singh Jhinger, who plays chief antagonist named Bhinder, has been in a somewhat similar situation like Khaira. Another career which has been affected by the lack of proper opportunities, Jhinger performs in a way which leaves you wondering as to why such actors aren't given such meatier roles on a regular basis.

Although encompassed with crimical inclination to a significant degree, Dakuaan Da Munda 2 can be watched for its larger and much-needed message in the times we're living in. The movie, which oozes inspiration of making a comeback in life, come what may, neither sugarcoats nor refrains from illustrating off-putting elements. It is the presence of such elements that make Dakuaan Da Munda 2 what it eventually becomes because importance of a day is only apprehended after having witnessed a night.
