Punjabi actor Roopi Gill made a striking impression at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival by bringing the essence of Punjab to one of the world’s biggest cinematic stages. While international stars dazzled in glamorous gowns and high-fashion couture, Roopi chose to celebrate her roots through an outfit deeply inspired by Punjabi history and culture.
The actor attended the prestigious event for her upcoming Punjabi film Chardikala, which was presented at the Cannes Film Market. Though the film is not part of the official competition lineup, Roopi’s red carpet appearance quickly became one of the festival’s standout cultural moments.
Dressed in a custom-designed ivory ensemble by Pitambara, Roopi’s look reflected the elegance of Punjab’s royal legacy. Styled by Jyoti Singh, the outfit drew inspiration from Maharani Jind Kaur and traditional 19th-century Punjabi craftsmanship. The silhouette featured a flowing kurti paired with a salwar and layered dupattas, creating a graceful and regal appearance.
What truly set the ensemble apart were its meaningful details. One dupatta carried delicate wheat motifs as a tribute to Punjab’s agricultural identity, while another showcased chakra-inspired embroidery symbolising spirituality and cultural pride. Adding an emotional touch, the title Chardikala was embroidered in Gurmukhi script directly into the fabric.
The intricate zardozi and dori craftsmanship added richness without overwhelming the outfit, perfectly balancing heritage with sophistication. Roopi completed the look with elaborate kundan, pearl and emerald jewellery, including traditional hathphool accessories that elevated the royal aesthetic.
Her appearance drew immediate comparisons online to Diljit Dosanjh’s celebrated Met Gala outing last year, as fans praised both stars for proudly showcasing Punjabi culture on global platforms rather than conforming to mainstream Western red carpet fashion.
Roopi’s Cannes debut was widely applauded for its authenticity. In a setting often dominated by global fashion trends, her decision to wear Punjab’s identity with pride turned into a powerful statement of cultural representation, making her appearance unforgettable for audiences worldwide.
