London: Punjabi music reached a landmark moment on Saturday as Indian singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh took over London’s Wembley Stadium with a sold-out show, becoming the first Punjabi singer to headline the iconic venue.
Performing as part of his Aura World Tour, Dosanjh stepped onto one of the world's most celebrated music stages on September 12, joining a select list of global artists who have headlined the stadium.

The significance of the night was not lost on the thousands gathered under the famous Wembley arch. The venue has previously hosted major names including Michael Jackson and Taylor Swift, who performed seven sold-out shows at the original Wembley in 1988 and eight shows at the rebuilt stadium in 2024 respectively.
‘Punjabis Have Arrived’ at Wembley
Dosanjh gave his traditional concert introduction a London twist, telling the roaring crowd: “Punjabi Aa Gaye Wembley Oye!”
The line, a variation of his familiar “the Punjabis have arrived” declaration, quickly became one of the defining moments of the evening.
Calling the occasion historic, Dosanjh told the audience, “This moment will go down in the history books.”
The response was immediate as the singer launched into some of his biggest tracks, including G.O.A.T. and Lover. Bhangra beats, rap influences and contemporary hip-hop sounds filled the stadium as fans danced and sang along.
A Homecoming Moment for British Punjabis
For many members of the British Punjabi community, the concert represented more than another major music show.
Fans who had grown up listening to Dosanjh’s music at home, in cars and at family celebrations turned up in large numbers, with many arriving hours before the performance.
The audience was predominantly South Asian, although fans from other backgrounds were also part of the crowd. Some described Dosanjh's popularity in terms usually reserved for the world's biggest music icons.
When he appeared on stage shortly after 8pm in traditional attire, the stadium erupted. His performance continued for more than two hours, with songs such as Hass Hass and Born to Shine showcasing his energetic dance style and distinctive vocals.
Connecting With Fans Beyond the Stage
Despite performing in a venue capable of holding around 90,000 people, Dosanjh repeatedly attempted to make the massive event feel personal.
Children and elderly fans were invited onto the stage, where he posed for photographs and presented gifts. He also made a special mention of spectators seated furthest from the stage, praising them for their enthusiasm and describing them as being “full of heart”.
Across the stadium, mobile phone lights illuminated the stands while fans joined in with the songs. The area closest to the stage at times took on the atmosphere of a Punjabi wedding, with concertgoers enthusiastically matching the singer's dance moves.
From Punjab to the World Stage
Wembley marks another major milestone in Dosanjh's rapidly expanding international career.
The singer became the first Punjabi-language performer to appear at Coachella in 2023, further expanding the reach of Punjabi music among international audiences. His appearance at the Met Gala, where he wore traditional Punjabi attire, also attracted global attention.
His career has included collaborations with international stars such as Ed Sheeran and Sia, while his appearances alongside American television personality Jimmy Fallon have introduced his music and Punjabi humour to an even wider audience.
Dosanjh's appeal extends beyond music. His Bollywood acting career and humorous social media presence have helped him build a following among people who may not necessarily be familiar with Punjabi music.
Ahmedabad Show Announced
The Wembley performance also brought news for fans in India, with Dosanjh announcing that he will perform at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in November.
The London concert eventually moved towards an emotional finale with Main Hoon Punjabi, accompanied by a spectacular fireworks display.
Concertgoers Amit and Rani described the experience as unforgettable, saying the atmosphere and energy were unlike anything they had experienced at his earlier UK shows.
For them, the night represented not just a concert but a celebration of Punjabi culture on one of the world's biggest musical stages.
‘I Want Our People to Say We Can Do This Too’
Speaking backstage before the performance, Dosanjh described headlining Wembley as a dream.
He recalled that people had warned him about booking such a huge stadium and advised him to reconsider.
But the singer said his focus was on giving Punjabi audiences an opportunity to see their culture represented on such a prestigious stage.
“I said: ‘We'll see whatever comes. I want that our people are happy and can say yes, we can do this too!’” he said.
For an artist who began his journey in Punjab, sharing the Wembley stage with the world's biggest musical names carries particular significance.
As the fireworks lit up the London sky and Main Hoon Punjabi played to thousands of voices, Dosanjh's Wembley debut became another defining chapter in the global journey of Punjabi music.
