Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh has expressed admiration for Harmanpreet Kaur, the Punjab University (PU) student whose confrontation with Chandigarh police recently went viral. During his Ora Tour 2025 concert in Australia, Diljit led the audience in applauding Harmanpreet, praising her courage and determination.
Addressing the crowd, Diljit said, “You saw the video of the girl from Punjab University, saying, ‘Let go of my arms.’ Our message from all of us is that Punjab University belongs to Punjab, and whatever belongs to Punjab should go to Punjab. The girls who showed courage deserve a big round of applause.”
The incident that brought Harmanpreet into the spotlight occurred amid student protests against the dissolution of the Senate and Syndicate at Punjab University. Although the central government later withdrew the notification, students continued demanding the announcement of Senate elections. On November 10, a significant protest unfolded in Chandigarh.
Harmanpreet, a second-year Anthropology student from Nurpur Bedi in Anandpur Sahib, Ropar, had returned home and attempted to enter her hostel. She was stopped at the university gate by police officers and confronted when a female officer grabbed her arm. Undeterred, Harmanpreet reportedly told the police, “Let go of my hand, and if anything happens, you’ll see.” The video of this exchange quickly went viral on social media, sparking widespread discussion about student rights and courage.
By publicly praising Harmanpreet during his Australia show, Diljit Dosanjh has amplified the conversation, highlighting the impact of student activism and inspiring young people across Punjab.
