Diljit Dosanjh, the trailblazing Punjabi singer-actor, made a spectacular debut at the Met Gala 2025, captivating the fashion world with a Maharaja-inspired ensemble that paid homage to his roots. Designed by Prabal Gurung, Dosanjh’s look was a powerful celebration of Punjabi culture, marking a significant moment for Indian representation at the prestigious event.
Stepping out of New York’s Carlyle Hotel, Dosanjh exuded royalty in an ivory achkan, pajama, and a sweeping cape embroidered with the map of Punjab and the Mool Mantra in Gurmukhi script. His white turban, adorned with golden jewelry and a kalgi, complemented the outfit, while a lion-headed, jewel-studded kirpan (ceremonial sword) added a bold desi twist to the traditional dandy walking stick. The look, styled by Abhilasha Devnani, was accessorized with multi-layered diamond necklaces, channeling the grandeur of Patiala’s Maharaja Bhupinder Singh.
The Met Gala 2025, themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” and inspired by Monica L. Miller’s Slaves to Fashion, focused on menswear for the first time in over 20 years, with a dress code of “Tailored for You.” Dosanjh’s outfit, rooted in Sikh heritage, resonated with the theme’s emphasis on individuality and cultural identity, earning accolades for its seamless blend of tradition and modernity.
“Diljit’s look is a love letter to Punjab,” said designer Prabal Gurung, who has previously styled Indian stars like Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone for the Met Gala. Dosanjh, reportedly the only Indian invited to Anna Wintour’s exclusive post-Gala dinner, dined alongside global icons like Shakira and Gayle King, further highlighting his growing influence.
Fans took to social media to express their pride, with one X user writing, “Diljit at Met Gala 2025 is pure Punjabi royalty! That turban and sword are iconic.” Another called him “India’s most fashionable man.”
Following his Dil-luminati Tour and appearances at Coachella and Paris Fashion Week, Dosanjh continues to elevate Punjabi culture globally. His upcoming collaboration, Buck, with Jackson Wang, is slated for release on May 9, promising another milestone in his illustrious career.
