Just days before the Filmfare Punjab Awards at IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali, rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh has landed in controversy once again. A formal complaint has been filed urging authorities to stop him from performing songs that allegedly promote drugs, obscenity, alcohol, and weapons.
The event, scheduled for August 23, 2025, is expected to bring together several big names from Punjabi music and cinema. However, social activist Dr. Panditrao Dharanwar has written to the Punjab government and district administration, demanding that organizers provide a sworn affidavit by August 20, pledging that no objectionable content will be performed on stage. He has cautioned that if no action is taken, he will move the High Court with a contempt petition.
Concerns Over Lyrics and Past Controversy
In his letter, Dr. Dharanwar reminded officials that the Punjab Women’s Commission had earlier issued a notice to Honey Singh over his track Millionaire, accusing him of insulting women. Despite the summons, the rapper never appeared before the panel. “Such lyrics not only disrespect women but also send harmful messages to society,” Dharanwar wrote.
Songs like Char Bottle Vodka, Manali Trance, One Bottle Down, Main Sharabi, Breakup Party, Maniac, Makhna, and Millionaire were cited in the complaint for glorifying alcohol consumption, vulgarity, and drug culture.
Court Orders Referenced
Dharanwar also drew attention to a Punjab and Haryana High Court ruling in response to his earlier PIL, where the court directed police in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh to ensure that live shows do not feature tracks encouraging drug abuse, alcoholism, or violence.
Organizers May Face Scrutiny
The activist has demanded that Mohali district authorities secure a written affidavit from the event organizers, with a copy provided to him for monitoring. “If such an undertaking is ignored or violated, we will be compelled to take legal steps,” he warned.
With the Filmfare Awards only days away, the complaint has triggered fresh debate over censorship, music culture, and the responsibility of artists performing at high-profile public events.
