Punjabi rapper and music composer Yo Yo Honey Singh is facing renewed criticism after a Bharatiya Janata Party leader in Punjab approached the state’s top police official, seeking action over the content of the singer’s latest music video.
Arvind Sharma, BJP Punjab’s co-convenor, has submitted a written complaint to the Director General of Police, objecting to Honey Singh’s recently released track “Naagin.” In the complaint, Sharma has urged the police to register a case and ensure that the song is removed from online platforms, alleging that it promotes obscenity.
According to Sharma, the visuals in the music video include dance sequences and costumes that he described as inappropriate and inconsistent with Punjab’s cultural ethos. He claimed that such portrayals misrepresent Punjabi identity and undermine the state’s long-standing traditions, particularly those centred on respect and dignity.
The BJP leader also expressed concern over the song’s easy accessibility on digital platforms such as YouTube. He argued that the absence of effective age filters could expose minors to content he believes is unsuitable, potentially influencing young audiences in a negative way.
Describing the issue as one affecting public morality, Sharma called for strict legal measures not only against the singer but also against others involved in producing and distributing the video.
There has been no immediate response from Yo Yo Honey Singh or his representatives regarding the allegations. Punjab Police officials have also not yet indicated whether they plan to initiate legal proceedings based on the complaint.
The development adds to a series of controversies that have, in the past, accompanied some of the artist’s releases, with debates often centring on creative expression versus cultural sensitivity.
