A new song by Punjabi singer Gulab Sidhu has provoked strong backlash from village leaders in Barnala district, with sarpanches claiming the lyrics insult their role and efforts in local governance.
The controversy arose from the song’s lines referencing sarpanches, which leaders say misrepresent their work and spread false narratives. On Sunday, a large group of sarpanches gathered outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office, raising slogans against Sidhu and demanding corrective action.
“We contribute from our own pockets in addition to government funds to improve villages, yet this song unfairly targets us for the singer’s publicity,” said one protester.
The particular lyric, “Sane Sarpanch Sara Pind Kutt Doo,” has been cited as deeply offensive, leading to calls for a complete removal of the song from social media and event playlists.
Standoff Over Apology and Ban
The protesting sarpanches have insisted that Sidhu issue a public apology in front of a large gathering of village heads. So far, Sidhu has apologized online, but local leaders have dismissed the apology as incomplete. They have also prevented DJs from playing the song at events in the area.
Family Comments Escalate Tensions
Attempts at reconciliation were complicated after the singer’s mother reportedly remarked, “There will always be pamphlets on singers,” which protestors interpreted as dismissive of their concerns. This has further fueled demands for accountability.
Big Gathering Set for Monday
Barnala sarpanches have announced a major assembly on Monday to decide the next steps. Organizers warned that if the situation escalates or public order is disrupted, full responsibility would rest on the singer.
Authorities are preparing to monitor the gathering to ensure it remains peaceful, while discussions continue over balancing artistic expression with respect for local governance.
This incident underscores the ongoing tension between freedom of artistic expression and the sensitivities of public figures in Punjab.
