Hans Raj Hans has taken on a new role in Indian cinema—this time away from the stage. The Punjabi singer is one of 18 members appointed to the reconstituted Central Board of Film Certification, according to a Ministry of Information and Broadcasting notification issued on September 16.

The government’s list places Hans at number seven, alongside names including Ricky Kej, Priyadarshan, Suniel Shetty, Roopali Ganguly, Preity Zinta, Pankaj Tripathi, Prosenjit Chatterjee and Pallavi Joshi. The appointment gives a prominent Punjabi musical voice a place on the national body associated with film certification.

A three-year institutional role

The reconstituted board took effect immediately and has been appointed for three years or until further government orders, whichever comes first. That time frame matters: this is a defined institutional appointment, rather than an honorary mention or a role connected to one particular release.

The notification cites Section 3(1) of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, read with Rule 3 of the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024. In practical terms, those provisions supply the legal basis for the government’s reconstitution of the board and its new membership.

Hans joins a panel that draws together people associated with several parts of Indian cultural life. For Punjabi entertainment followers, his inclusion is the most immediate point of connection: an artist known across Punjabi music and diaspora audiences is now part of a national film institution.

What the appointment does—and does not—say

The September 16 release establishes Hans’s membership and the board’s term. It does not name him as chairperson, assign him responsibility for a particular film or suggest that one member personally decides the certification of every release.

That distinction keeps the development in proportion. The news is not that Hans has issued a verdict on a film; it is that he has entered the formal structure within which India’s certification system operates. Any specific work or responsibility that follows will need to be assessed when it is publicly documented.

The timing also gives Hans two very different public engagements in the same week. Punjabi Mania’s event calendar separately lists him for a September 18 performance at the Living Arts Centre Auditorium in Mississauga. The Canadian concert is unrelated to the government appointment, but it underlines the breadth of the audiences following his work—from Punjabi live music abroad to an institutional role in Indian cinema.

For now, the government notification supplies the consequential detail: Hans Raj Hans is one of 18 members on the newly reconstituted CBFC, serving under a term that began immediately on September 16. The next meaningful chapter will come through the board’s work, not speculation about individual films before that work is recorded.
