Kamini Kaushal, one of the most enduring figures of early Hindi cinema, passed away at her residence in Mumbai at the age of 98. Her death, confirmed by family associate Sanjay Narain, brings to a close a film career that spanned more than seventy years.
Kaushal made her screen debut in 1946 with the internationally acclaimed Neecha Nagar, a film that would mark the beginning of her rise as one of Bollywood’s first major female stars. In the years that followed, she appeared in a series of memorable films such as Do Bhai (1947), Shaheed (1948), Nadiya Ke Paar (1948), Ziddi (1948), and Shabnam (1949), cementing her place as a leading lady of her era.
At the height of her popularity, Kaushal worked alongside many of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated actors, including Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, and Raj Kapoor. By the mid-1960s, she moved naturally into character roles, continuing to win acclaim for her nuanced performances. Her work in titles like Shaheed (1965), Do Raaste (1969), Anhonee (1973), and Prem Nagar (1974) showcased her lasting versatility.
Remarkably, Kaushal remained active onscreen well into her nineties. Her final film appearance came in 2022 with Laal Singh Chaddha, in which she acted at the age of 95 — a testament to her unwavering connection to storytelling and performance.
Narain noted that she died peacefully at home on Thursday night and would have celebrated her 99th birthday in February. Those close to her said the family prefers to grieve privately, consistent with the actor’s lifelong tendency to stay away from public attention.
She leaves behind her three sons — Shravan, Vidur, and Rahul — as admirers across generations remember her as a pioneering artist who helped shape the foundation of Indian cinema.
