Jasbir Jassi: The veteran singer has asked for governmental interference on Punjabi songs which promote violence and drugs.

Veteran singer-turned-actor Jasbir Jassi has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh to put curbs on Punjabi songs promoting violence and drugs.

Jassi, who had released his latest single track titled 'Dil Mangdi' last month, took to his social media platform Twitter handle to appeal for governmental interference in a bid to prevent the society from getting "destroyed" by songs on drugs, violence and weapons.

There is no hiding to the fact that the debate on Punjabi songs which promote drugs and violence has been a long-standing one. While some artists criticize the same publicly, others find no faults labeling them as something done only for "entertainment purpose".

Primarily art forms of different types, the last thing that songs and music videos need is governmental restrictions for the same has it in it to question the freedom of expression of artists.

In what gives the impression of being a never-ending debate, all the stakeholders (including viewers/listeners) are required to do introspection at a personal level. While an occasional song or two on such genres is acceptable, every second song shouldn't be about glorifying drugs and weapons.

On one hand, artists need to find the "right balance" regarding different genres. On the other hand, viewers/listeners should also support and learn from meaningful songs for there is no shortage of the same even in the current scenario.
