Ahead of the much-anticipated Punjabi Filmfare Awards, singer Jasbir Jassi has stirred debate by openly objecting to rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh’s participation in the event.

In a video message running over four minutes, Jassi expressed disappointment, arguing that the decision contradicts Punjab’s ongoing campaign against drugs. “For years, we have said this man glorified alcohol and drugs in his songs, yet he is being invited to perform on Punjab’s stage. It hurts to think we don’t have other artists left who can represent our culture positively,” he said.

Jassi reminded viewers that there had recently been demands for legal action against Honey Singh over one of his controversial songs. He questioned why, despite this, the organizers and state leadership allowed his performance. “What is the compulsion? Why is a person who once said he would inject drugs into the DNA of generations being promoted here? This is not in Punjab’s interest,” he asked.

The singer also clarified that his stand was not driven by personal grievances. “Some may say I am frustrated or sidelined. But this is not about me—it’s about Punjab. If I must choose between my friends in the industry and the well-being of Punjab, I will choose Punjab every time,” he stressed.

Calling on the Chief Minister and senior police officials to intervene, Jassi appealed to Punjabis to resist normalizing such artists. “We need role models who uplift our children, not those who push them toward destruction,” he said.

The issue has divided opinion online—while some fans argue that music should be seen as entertainment, others back Jassi’s demand for accountability from organizers.

The Punjabi Filmfare Awards are set to be hosted in Mohali, but the debate over Honey Singh’s presence now threatens to overshadow the celebration.
