Comedian Kapil Sharma’s newly launched café, Kap’s Cafe, located in Surrey, British Columbia, was attacked late Wednesday night in a shocking act of gun violence that has since been linked to a Khalistani terrorist. Despite the traumatic incident, the café has issued a strong statement, vowing not to bow down to intimidation and violence.
In an Instagram post, the cafe’s management expressed heartbreak over the attack but reaffirmed their commitment to creating a space of warmth and community. “We opened Kap's Cafe with hopes of bringing warmth, community and joy through delicious coffee and friendly conversations. To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking. We are processing this shock but we are not giving up,” the message read.
Firing Claimed by Khalistani Terrorist
Unidentified gunmen reportedly opened fire on the premises in the early hours of Thursday. Harjeet Singh Laddi, a known Khalistani terrorist and fugitive wanted by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA), later claimed responsibility for the attack. Laddi is affiliated with the banned terror group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).
Sources said the firing may have been provoked by past remarks made by Kapil Sharma, though it remains unclear whether the cafe was specifically targeted or if the attack was meant as a broader warning to the comedian.
Canadian journalist Sameer Kaushal reported that nearly a dozen bullets were fired at the café. In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the glass windows of the establishment were seen riddled with bullet holes, sending shockwaves through the local South Asian community.
Surrey Police Launch Probe
The Surrey Police Service confirmed the shooting in an official statement. “On Thursday, July 10, at 1:50 am, Surrey Police Service was called to a business located in the 8400 block of 120 Street for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers determined that shots were fired toward the business, damaging property while staff members were still present inside. Thankfully, no injuries were reported,” the police said.
Authorities also confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and efforts are underway to gather surveillance footage and identify witnesses. “There is currently no suspect information available to share,” the police added.
Community Support and Global Attention
Following the incident, Kap’s Cafe also thanked well-wishers for their outpouring of love and solidarity. “This cafe exists because of your belief in what we're building together. Let’s stand firm against violence and ensure Kap’s Cafe remains a place of warmth and community,” the statement concluded.
The attack comes at a time when Kapil Sharma’s career has seen a new high with the successful launch of The Kapil Sharma Show Season on Netflix on June 21. The incident has now drawn international attention, with Indian authorities likely to raise concerns with Canadian officials over the presence and activities of wanted separatist elements operating on Canadian soil.
As investigations continue, the South Asian diaspora in Canada is expressing both shock and resilience, rallying behind the message that no act of violence can silence community spirit and creative freedom.
