"Last 20 minutes of Shareek 2 are edge-of-your-seat": Navaniat Singh defines Shareek 2 as fight for identity

Navaniat Singh defines Shareek 2: The prominent director talked about the offerings of his upcoming Punjabi movie.

In terms of days, the estimated time of arrival of upcoming Punjabi movie titled 'Shareek 2' is only a single-digit figure now. As far as the releasing day is concerned, the much-awaited movie will release on the imminent Friday, i.e., July 8.

Released in 2015, 'Shareek' getting converted into a franchise after almost seven years is a rare scenario when contemporary Punjabi makers announce a sequel at the end of the first part itself.

Readers must note that Shareek 2 is also one of the numerous movies worldwide which got delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Been affected by both the major lockdowns in India, Shareek 2 will release after 30 months of going on the floors for the first time.

As much as this undesired delay was frustrating for the whole team, director Navaniat Singh admitted to finding solace in the fact that movies were getting delayed at a global level and that he wasn't the only one affected by them.

Navaniat Singh defines Shareek 2 as fight for identity

Speaking to Punjabi Mania during the trailer launch of Shareek 2 in Chandigarh last month, Navaniat Singh talked about how rich content of the movie made it easier for him to convince two male lead actors in Jimmy Sheirgill and Dev Kharoud.

"I believe it [convinving two male lead actors] is not difficult if your content is up to the mark. We had prepared in such a way while writing [the script] that we were confident of them agreeing to do this movie. We had worked hard to the extent that our seventh draft was the first narration to them," Navaniat told Punjabi Mania.

"I mean you'll see that the characters are very balanced. Each character has his own inner conflict. Both Jassa [Sheirgill] and Baaz [Kharoud] have their own dimension, stand and fight. I always define a script by one word. For me, Shareek was all about greed. Similarly, Shareek 2 is all about identity. It's a fight for identity and name."

In what is Navaniat's seventh Punjabi movie with Sheirgill in the lead role, it is his first-ever collaboration with Kharoud and writer Inderpal Singh. Kharoud and Inderpal, however, have worked in the past on six occasions including 'Rupinder Gandhi 2: The Robinhood(2017), 'Blackia(2019), 'DSP Dev(2019) among others.

A primary reason behind the critical success of Shareek was its songs named 'Shareeke Baazi' (sung by Sippy Gill and written by Happy Raikoti) and 'Mere Saiyaan' (sung by Javed Bashir and written by Babu Singh Maan). Speaking against including a lot of songs in Shareek 2, Navaniat expressed confidence in the amalgamation of songs and script of Shareek 2 having it in them to work wonders in the cinema halls.

"Songs are situational [in Shareek 2]. I am always of the notion that songs in a movie should look like the songs of that movie. It shouldn't comprise of single tracks. Songs of 'Shareek 2' will take the screenplay forward. The narrative happens through songs.

"I don't want to reveal much but [because of the songs] the last 20 minutes of Shareek 2 are edge-of-your-seat," Navaniat added.
