The long-running controversy between Bollywood actor Salman Khan and the Bishnoi community has returned to the spotlight after Ramesh Bishnoi, uncle of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, made another public appeal to the actor.

On the occasion of the 542nd foundation day of the Bishnoi Samaj, Ramesh invited Salman Khan to visit Mukti Dham Mukam temple in Bikaner and seek forgiveness from the community over the killing of two blackbucks in 1998. He also assured the actor that he would personally take responsibility for his safety if he decided to visit the religious site.

Ramesh's statement comes amid continuing concerns about the actor's security and the history of threats associated with Lawrence Bishnoi's gang. He maintained that the dispute should be resolved through dialogue and an apology rather than violence.

'I Do Not Support Violence Against Salman Khan'

Speaking to The Tribune over the phone, Ramesh Bishnoi clarified that he does not support any form of violence or attacks against Salman Khan or people associated with him.

He said he had repeatedly advised Lawrence and others to stay away from violent activities. According to him, the issue surrounding the actor should not become a reason for anyone to take the law into their own hands.

Ramesh also maintained that there was no personal hostility towards Salman Khan. He believes the resentment within sections of the Bishnoi community could have been addressed much earlier if the actor had offered an apology at the community's temple.

He emphasised that his intention was to bring the controversy to an end rather than encourage further confrontation.

Ramesh Bishnoi Responds to Salim Khan's Security Concerns

The invitation comes against the backdrop of concerns raised by Salim Khan, Salman Khan's father, regarding the safety of the actor should he visit the Bishnoi temple.

Responding to those apprehensions, Ramesh rejected the possibility of any threat from his side and offered a personal assurance of security for the Bollywood star.

He expressed the view that the controversy had continued for far too long and that an apology could help bring closure to the matter.

However, his assurance represents his personal statement and should not be interpreted as an official security guarantee from law enforcement agencies.

Why Is the Bishnoi Community Seeking an Apology From Salman Khan?

The dispute dates back to October 1998, when Salman Khan was accused of killing two blackbucks in Kankani village near Jodhpur, Rajasthan, during the filming of a movie.

Blackbucks hold particular religious and cultural significance for the Bishnoi community, which considers the protection of wildlife and nature an important part of its faith.

In 2018, a Jodhpur trial court convicted Salman Khan under the Wildlife Protection Act and sentenced him to five years in prison. He subsequently obtained bail while pursuing legal remedies.

Other actors named in the case, including Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam, were acquitted.

The case has remained a sensitive issue within the community, with demands for an apology continuing over the years.

Understanding the Bishnoi Community's Connection With Wildlife Protection

The Bishnoi community has a centuries-old tradition of environmental conservation. Its principles are rooted in the 29 teachings established by Guru Jambheshwar, also known as Jambhoji, during the 15th century.

These teachings place considerable importance on protecting trees, preserving wildlife and maintaining harmony with nature.

The community has a strong presence in Rajasthan, particularly in Bikaner, Jodhpur, Nagaur and Barmer. Bishnoi families also live in parts of Haryana, including Hisar, Fatehabad and Sirsa, as well as Punjab's Abohar-Fazilka region.

For the community, the blackbuck is not simply another wildlife species but an animal associated with its religious beliefs and conservation traditions. This explains why the 1998 hunting case continues to carry considerable emotional significance.

Lawrence Bishnoi Gang's Threats Have Kept the Controversy Alive

The issue has taken on a wider dimension because of threats attributed to Lawrence Bishnoi's gang against Salman Khan.

In April 2024, gunmen opened fire outside the actor's Mumbai residence, prompting heightened security measures. The incident brought renewed attention to the threats previously directed at the actor.

The controversy has also been linked to other reported security incidents and threats involving individuals associated with the entertainment industry.

Despite Ramesh Bishnoi's latest appeal, the history of these developments means that the actor's safety remains an important concern.

Will Salman Khan Accept the Temple Invitation?

Ramesh Bishnoi's latest statement has once again brought the possibility of reconciliation into public discussion. His appeal centres on a visit to Mukti Dham Mukam temple and an apology to the Bishnoi community for the blackbuck incident.

However, there has been no confirmation that Salman Khan intends to accept the invitation or visit the temple.

For now, the controversy remains unresolved. While Ramesh has expressed his willingness to help end the dispute peacefully, whether his appeal leads to any dialogue between the actor and representatives of the community remains to be seen.

The latest development also highlights an important distinction: disagreements over a long-standing legal and religious issue must be addressed through peaceful means and lawful processes, without threats or intimidation.
