Synopsis: Angrej is the story of Geja (Amrinder Gill), who falls in live with Madho back in 1945. It was an era where love was treated no less than a crime. The film potrays beautifully, how Geja irrespective of all odds rendezvous with Madho. However before their love could bloom, Hakam (Ammy Virk) comes into the scene and blows Madho away from Geja with his riches. Shattered, Geja finds solace in Dhan Kaur, who helps him to get back his lost love but eventually herself falls for him.
Review: Directed by Simerjit Singh whose last outing Baaz was a flop, Angrej came with very high expectations right from the day the trailer was released on the Internet. And to begin with the film lives upto the expectations and even exceeds in some parts. Making a period film is never easy in any language but the team of Angrej have been successful in their attempt at making a period film.
Angrej is romantic comedy, well then what’s new in this. They are released every Friday but it’s the theme and writing of the film which makes it a special one. Beginning with the backbone of the film, Amberdeep Singh – The writer of the film. He’s kept the screenplay water tight and there are very few or no dull moments in the plot. Cheers to Amber for doing such a commendable job with the story and dialogues of the film. I’ll watch the film just one more time to hear the dialogues of the 40’s era. Amber has a long way to go from here and I predicted his success in my review of J&J 2.
Coming to another backbone, the director Simerjit Singh, he’s shown tremendous improvement here from Baaz. He knew exactly what he wanted to project and how he wanted to and he went just the right way. Cheers to the Art Direction team of the film and Cinematography team for a good job.
Coming to the performances, Amrinder Gill is setting high standards for himself as an actor with each passing film. He’s passed the Acid Test now and can be counted as an actor. His work on dialogue delivery and punches has improved vastly which shows his hard work and dedication to the profession. Binnu Dhillon was brilliant as usual. He always does something unique which the audience never forgets and this time also his scenes with Sardar Sohi were terrific.
Sargun Mehta is the find of this film. If she chooses right films from here she could be the next big thing in Punjabi cinema. And I say so because she knows how to act. Aditi Sharma makes her debut in Punjabi Cinema. Her character Maano was a meaty role for any actress but she somehow wastes the opportunity to consolidate her position as an actress. Amy Virk also makes his debut in this film and does a fair job and provides entertainment in the film.
This film also has a talented support cast including Sardar Sohi, Nirmal Rishi, Anita Devgan, Razia Sukhbir, Nisha Bano, etc. All of them deliver their level best. I really liked Sardar Sohi’s character in the film.
Music of the film is good to average. Kurta, Family Di Member and Tappe are my picks from the album.
Overall, Angrej has that factor in it to become a film which will be remembered for a long time to come. Good Writing is backed by powerful performances and direction. Strongly RECOMMENDED!
