Synopsis: Bailaras is the story of Jagga (Binnu Dhillon) who is a simple middle aged man living in a village with his grandmother (Nirmal Rishi). A film crew come to their village for shooting and Jagga meets Sonali (Prachi Tehlan) who is the lead actress in the film and falls in love with her. Also, Jagga owns a Belarus Tractor which is referred to as Bailaras in the film. Karma (Dev Kharoud) & Jagga are rivals in Tochain competitions which happen in their village and Jagga always defeats Karma in those competitions because he has a stronger tractor than Karma. Karma wants to own Jagga’s Bailaras and circumstances arise that Jagga has to sell his tractor to Karma. Will Jagga get his tractor back? Will Sonali & Jagga end up together?

Review: Binnu Dhillon, Ksshitij Chaudhary, Jass Grewal. These are names which are associated with umpteen blockbusters. To be honest when Bailaras was announced, I was personally very excited to see what the trio has in store for the audiences. Ksshitij Chaudhary & Binnu Dhillon have made us laugh innumerable times in memorable films like Vekh Barattan Challiyan, Mr. & Mrs. 420 & Jatts In Golmaal and Jass Grewal has written some of the best films of this decade like Bambukat, Jatt James Bond, Rabb Da Radio to name a few. But as the release of Bailaras came near, my expectations went downhill day by day and that was because of the sluggish promos and songs of the film and guess what, I was right in not expecting much from the film.

Bailaras, written by Jass Grewal has a very weak and thin script. The plot is very predictable and the trailer itself gave a very fair idea of what the film would be. What I have seen in Jass’s previous films is that he has a very strong and in-depth characterisation. The characters are very clearly described and he then lets his magic pen dictate terms. But that is not the case with Bailaras. The story of a common man who falls in one-sided love with a girl from a superior background. Later the common man losing everything he had for the sake of love and winning it all in the end against all odds is nothing new at all.

Directed by Ksshitij Chaudhary, Bailaras carried the weight of expectations he had built during his previous film, Vekh Barattan Challiyan. But then someone reminded me that he is the same man who had made Main Teri Tu Mera & Yaara O Dildaara. So what I have come to a conclusion is that Ksshitij should make comedies because that is what he makes best and should stick to his strength. Coming to Bailaras, Ksshitij as a director failed to create any strong moments and the build up worked in favour of the film despite having a very powerful opening & climax sequence. Leave those 2 scenes aside, the film fell flat throughout.

Coming to the Performances, Binnu Dhillon delivers yet another sincere performance in this film. He is an actor who keeps on delivering punch after punch of a performance, however the script or film is. Sensational stuff from the actor. Prachi Tehlan, also delivers a good performance in the film. She is a non-punjabi and keeping that in mind, she does well. Only flaw was in her looks and for that she should fire her make-up artists from the film immediately.

Dev Kharoud yet again acts well after the success of Rupinder Gandhi 2. I have always been a fan of his performances and I believe that he should now start getting his due very soon in this Industry. Nirmal Rishi yet again played Dadi in the film. When we talk about the character for a grandmother in any film, Nirmal Rishi is the 1st name on the list. She was all right here. Karamjit Anmol had a small role and his character was not at all justified in the film. Hobby Dhaliwal was also pretty average.

Music of the film was very outdated. Off late, Jatinder Shah has failed to produce some good music and keeps on repeating the same beats film after film. For example, Sandhoori from this film was a beat to beat recreation of Kainthe Wala from last year’s Bambukat. Muqabla and Jigra were also based on repetitive beats. The only saving grace in the music album was Maaye Ni Meriye sung beautifully by Rakes Maini.

Overall, A lot was expected from Bailaras but it seemed that this Tractor ran out of fuel in pretty early stages and never really found the exact fuel to power the engine towards the later stages. A big disappointment.
