Synopsis: Jora 10 Numbaria is the story of Zorawar Singh aka Jora (Deep Sidhu) who aspires to be a Gangster one day right from his childhood due to the circumstances he has been brought up under. First, he finds a godfather in Teja Aulakh (Hobby Dhaliwal), who uses Jora for his own personal benefits and later he meets a retired gangster, Jagga Bai (Dharmendra) who mentors him and guides him to become the next big thing in the gang world of Punjab. On one side is Teja who brought Jora into the gang world which he wanted to enter since childhood and one other side is Jagga who has mentored and nurtured him and in between are some politicians who want to use Jora for their own benefits. Review: To being with, I never even imagined that Punjabi Cinema can get a genuine Crime Thriller surrounded by the Political and Action background so early. But credits to Amardeep Singh Gill and Bathinde Wale Bai Films for proving me wrong and making a film which Punjabi Cinema can proudly call their answer to the likes of Gangs Of Wasseypur, Satya or Company. Amardeep Singh Gill makes his debut as a director with Jora 10 Numbaria.
The story, screenplay, dialogues of Jora 10 Numbaria have all been penned by Amardeep Singh Gill. To put the writing in one word, simply – AWESOME. The writing of the film is crisp, fresh and something new. Most of the characters are very well written and drawn aptly for screen. All the characters you saw on screen were larger than life and more interesting were their names – Jwala Chaudhary, Shera Rathore, Teja Driver, Dina Gujjar. You don’t get to listen these names everyday in the neighbourhoods. Do you? The screenplay is well written and has all the elements required to make an action drama film.
It has shootouts, inter-gang wars, political involvement in the gang world, revenge saga, troubled past, etc. Well like every human creation even this one has a few flaws as well like the romantic portion. It was completely unwanted and even the romantic portion was fully half-baked and that romantic song just before the climax, let’s leave it here. But thankfully, the pros overpower the cons and Jora 10 Numbaria stands tall amidst a few minor flaws here & there. One more thing which I felt missing was a Chedi Singh from Dabangg or a Ramadhir Singh from Gangs of Wasseypur type strong villain who could challenge the larger than life persona of Jora in the film.
Coming to Direction, Amardeep Singh Gill makes his debut as a director with this full length feature film. He has earlier made critically acclaimed short films. To put it simply, Gill does justice to his writing and gave the required treatment which the writing deserved. Gill’s triumph is that he has made a film which may or may not work today but will surely be remembered by many as a cult in future. Deep Sidhu, Hobby Dhaliwal, Ashish Duggal and Yaad Grewal are so good that you can almost smell the gangster/criminal grime from their faces and body language in the film. And this is a victory for any director.
Coming to performances, Deep Sidhu as Jora is a revealation for Punjabi Cinema. Deep puts the baggage of an unsuccessful debut behind him and delivers a punching performance as Jora. He was convincing enough in that larger than life role and I wish to see more of him in the future. Dharmendra was pretty good in his guest appearance. Now besides these 2, all the support cast did an exceptional job and the names are mentioned in a random order as they come in my mind.
Sardar Sohi as Baghel Singh was convincing. Hobby Dhaliwal as Teja was wonderful. Mukul Dev as Shera Rathore was superb. Ashish Duggal as Jwala Chaudhary was too good and this time he really did a good job in this character. Mukesh Tiwari was good. Yaad Grewal as Deepa played a great sidekick to Jora. Kul Sidhu hardly had any dialogues. Other actors, mostly did great job except one or two here and there.
Music of the film was good to average. The songs suited the situations in the film but audio wise, I don’t know weather they will work in the long run or not. But they looked good in the film. Except for that romantic track towards the end, which was not required.
Other technical aspects of the film like Camera work was pretty awesome. Editing was razor sharp and gave the film a crisp look. Action was all right. Costumes were neatly done.
Overall, Jora 10 Numbaria is one of the best films I have personally seen this year in Punjabi Cinema. If you as an audiences like hard hitting crime thrillers and want to see something new in Punjabi Cinema, then Jora 10 Numbaria is a must-watch!
