Director Avtar Singh’s Mitti Na Pharol Jogiya is a story of pangs of separation by the partition of the country. Jagga, a young school going boy, discovers he has a sister living in Pakistan. In his efforts to unite with his sister, he crosses the border and is captured by the Pakistani Rangers. There he is falsely implicated in a bomb explosion case and is sentenced to death. However things turn around as he unites with his sister and is later proven to be innocent.
The film was praised by Bollywood directors for its story. Avtar Singh has very creatively established the plot of his film. But later things go erratic. There are certain things in the story which one cannot justify like digging a small piece of land at the border takes entire day and even some part of night. Further as Jagga crosses border Pakistani Rangers which were nowhere to be seen, suddenly flash in and arrest him. A young mind will break after bearing the torture by Police, but here the boy skips the opportunity to cross the border and gets arrested again to keep up the search of his sister. The film was praised for its storyline, even director Avtar Singh was very confident about it but sadly it isn’t that impressive.
The film stars Japtej Singh, Kartar Cheema and Amann Grewal in the lead roles. This is second film for Japtej, he had earlier featured in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Acting wise everyone has done a decent job.
The film has six songs sung by six singers, penned by 5 lyricists and the music is given by Desi Crew and Kannu Jimmi. When such a huge team with big names comes together, the expectations are to boom high, but again all you get is disappointment. The music of the movie is an average affair.

Director Avtar Singh has chosen locations wisely for his film. He has tried to bring out the rural culture of Punjab. Avtar has also written story and screenplay of the film. It is his first film as a director and will certainly be a learning experience for him.
Overall, Mitti Na Pharol Jogiya is a typical drama of the 90s with good acting but average story and music. Punjabi Mania rates it 2.5 out of 5.
