Review: Punjabi Cinema had been going through a major slump over the last 7-8 months, all thanks to a handful of films which were not worthy of being classified as Punjabi films. But anyways, let’s leave aside the past and have a look at the future which looks bright Mr. & Mrs. 420 – the latest offering from Punjabi Cinema has released in theatres and to be frank this film is the best Punjabi film to have been released in the last 6 months. Director Ksshitij Chaudhary, who is not a new name in the Punjabi Industry returns with his 5th film after a successful outing with Jatts in Golmaal. This film has it’s share of comedy as well as romance in it which seemed to have been missing in Punjabi films from a long time.

Mr. & Mrs. 420 has some of the biggest names of the industry associated with it in all the departments right from Writing to Music, Star cast to Production. Coming to the writing of the film, Ace-Director Smeep Kang (Carry On Jatta fame) has written the Story and Screenplay for the film. Smeep has done a great job here, by trying to attempt something which is new and at the same time looks funny on screen. The story is fine and the screenplay although not crispy like chips but it hold things together. Talking about the dialogues, they are penned by Naresh Kathooria and are something which is not what you have never heard before on screen but still they make you laugh and that’s what they should be doing. Dialogues fit well into the situations and that’s what about does the job for the film.

Director Ksshitj Chaudhary seems to be well aware of the phrase – ‘There’s always a scope for improvement’ and that’s what he has shown here. His work as a director this time around has been much much better that what was in his last film. And this is what has seemed to work for the film and the film has turned out to be not only a good comic caper but also has many portions of romance in it which also work. Music has been done by Jaidev Kumar & Jassi Katyal. When you have 3 singers of the current generation and that too the heartthrobs, you expect some melodious as well as chartbuster music from the film. This film, I won’t say has path-breaking music (No Punjabi film in recent times have had that) but has some really good tracks which sooth one’s ears. Tracks like Naina Nu, Tere Layi and Hatthan Vich lead the music from the front.

Now coming to the performances, firstly again full marks to the director and writer for the choice of right actors for right roles and writing some great characters for them. I will begin the performances with Binnu Dhillon. This film, I won’t be surprised if I classify it as a Binnu Dhillon film. He excels both as Neeru as well as Depty. One of the many reasons you got to see this film is him. I think after Carry On Jatta, this is the second film where he in actual gets to display his acting talent. Next in line is Babbal Rai. He was seen in a short but not so impressive cameo last year in Singh V/s Kaur. An year has passed and so has the acting of Babbal Rai matured and improved 100% in this film which is his first full-fledged film. He was just marvellous in the film and probably the surprising debut of the year.

Then come Jassi Gill & Yuvraj Hans. Yuvraj Hans was good in the role which he had for him. He got to ride the bicycle in the film and had a meaty role which he handled well. Jassi Gill also made his debut with this film. He has shown that even he is in line to become a future prospective star if he can deliver well in terms of performances. Jaswinder Bhalla has been doing if not same then somewhat similar kind of roles in every film he does. But this one was written for him and he seemed to have played it with sincerity. His scenes with Binnu as Neeru were the best part about his role. The girls didn’t have much for themselves in this all boys film but I was impressed by all 3 who have done a good job here. The girls department was lead by Shruti Sodhi followed by Swati Kapoor and Avantika Hundal.

On the whole, Mr. & Mrs. 420 is a film which surely becomes a must watch since the viewers of Punjabi Cinema haven’t seen a good film from a long time. Watch this film for it’s interesting plot, Binnu & Babbal’s performances and obviously to have a good time at the movies!
