Synopsis: Punjabi film Sadda Haq tells the story of the unchecked use of torture made during the 1980’s to mid-1990’s by the police system in Punjab, which was one of the most disturbed and disruptive period in the history of the state. ‘Sadda Haq’ is a fictionalized take inspired by real events of that period. It tells the life story of 2 men, Kartar Singh Baaz (Kuljinder Singh Sidhu) and Rajwant Singh (Dev Kharoud) through the eyes of an NRI girl Sharon (Dhriti Saharan) who is in India to carry out her research for her thesis. In India, she is supported by her boyfriend Karan (Gaurav Kakkar).
Script Analysis: Kuljinder S. Sidhu who happens to be the producer as well as the main actor of this film also writes the story and screenplay of this historical satire set in the 1980’s-90’s. He has chosen a very controversial topic, which has generated a lot of heat in the recent days. Without commenting on those matters, lets get straight to the point. The story by Sidhu is first grade and describes the sentiments of the men who assassinated the Home Minister.
Screenplay is patchy in parts and equally brilliant in the others. The unwanted song sequences in the first half disturb the pace of the film, but this one being an Indian film needs to have all that romance and songs. Dialogues also by Sidhu were all right and had a few punches and a few situational comedy one-liners, which were, needed to light-heart the audience from time to time.
Direction and Music: Mandeep Benipal, who makes his second film after ‘Ekam-Son of Soil’ seems to have improved his technique a lot when it comes to direction. He has kept the things very simple and realistic be it the choice of locations or the cinematography. He has implemented the things well enough to make a good film.
Music by Jatinder Shah is a big let down. Coming from the house of one of the star composers in the Industry, this is not what us expected of him. But still tracks like Sadda Haq and Dabb de Killi were just about okay.
Star Performances: Scripts like this one require great acting as well as talent to come out well. Kuljinder Sidhu as Kartar Singh was good and justified his presence. He can do much better than this in future. Dev Kharoud was the find of this film. There have been talks about his talent and this film justifies his talent. Dhriti Saharan was much better here than Pure Punjabi (her Debut film). She can achieve a lot more.
Gaurav Kakkar is a talented actor and had a small role. But he was effective here in this role. Yaad Grewal and Pramod Moutho proved effective in their negative shades. Dinesh Sood, Nidhi Sidhu and Sandeep Kapoor were all right in their small roles.
Final Say: Sadda Haq has a good story to tell. Something, which is out of the league in Punjabi Cinema, which is mostly about Comic Capers. It deserves a watch at least!
