Synopsis: Young Malang tells the story of 6 friends who meet each other on the first day of the college. 3 are boys and 3 girls, so they eventually fall in love with each other. The film is a journey of these friends from their college till their college re-union that is a few years later after the graduation.
Review: Young Malang marks the entry of various newcomers in this industry alongside some very experienced names. From the producer of the film to its director and also 3 new lead actors besides another Bollywood actress entering the Punjabi Cinema.
Debutante Director Rajdeep Singh has picked up a subject, which has the elements of romance, comedy, action as well as drama in it. Manshendra Kailey and Rajdeep Singh do Story and Screenplay whereas the Dialogues have been done by the Director Rajdeep Singh himself. The story of Young Malang is the only low point.
However, the Screenplay and narrative of the film has been kept on a fast forward mode, which however make up for the whole thing. Rajdeep’s efforts to make the audience laugh through his dialogues have worked and the funny punches and one-liners were quite enjoyable. To summarize, Screenplay and Dialogues make up for the whole thing.
Director Rajdeep Singh makes a confident debut as a director. I am sure he has a long career ahead of him in future. The clarity of his thoughts was visible in various portions of the film. Especially in the second half where he was able to create some hilarious as well as serious/dramatic situations and dealt with them easily. Also he was able to put up a great team of technicians like the DoP and the Choreographer, which made the film technically even more sound. Creative Producer Rahul Sidhu has also provided great support with his creative inputs to the project.
3 music composers did music. However, it lacked a chartbuster song, which could prove to be a hit for many years to come. However, songs like Hawa Cho Mehkan, Sapno ka Saya & Lakk Ch Current are my picks from the album. All these songs have one element in common – Vinaypal Buttar! As a Singer.
Coming to the performances, Balli Riar and Vinaypal Buttar made their big screen debuts. Co-incidentally both of them are singer turned actors. Balli has the looks and that charm to become a great actor in future, given the choice of roles and scripts he makes. Vinaypal Buttar also had a great comic timing and can be a choice for a comic role in future. Yuvraj Hans, in his 3rd film comes in a completely new avatar. Some might say he over-acted but that was the demand of his character.
Anita Kailey had a small role compared to the other 2 actresses. She has to have bigger roles to prove her acting talent. Cheers to Anjana Sukhani for playing her character well and also for speaking fluent Punjabi since she is a Bollywood Import to this industry. Equal credits to the writer/director for designing her character in such a way. Neetu Singh, after disappointing in her earlier films looks confident in this one. Yograj Singh the veteran, has a small role but it’s his voice and dialogues that make his character look different from the rest. Aryaajit Sapru who made his debut as Ronnie was extremely confident. He can go distances, if he keeps on delivering like this. Harpal Singh, Kiran Kumar and other supportive cast were all right in their cameos.
Final Say: Overall, Young Malang has it’s own share of positives. Technically the film is very sound and strong. If the word of mouth of this film is strong, then there’s no stopping this one at the Box Office! Also, looking at the work of the Art Director and Costume Designer can’t stop me from giving a mention for them.
