Synopsis: Mukhtiar Chadha is the story of Mukhtiar (Diljit) who is a carefree youngster and a student at Delhi University and lives life on his own terms. He is also a Property Dealer who is looking to make his first deal under his company – Mukhtiar Chadha & Sons. His life is going on smoothly until a local don played by Yashpal Sharma comes in his way.
Review: Mukhtiar Chadha was one of the most awaited films of Punjabi Cinema when it was announced way back in 2012 given the fact that it was the first film Diljit started after the huge success of Jatt & Juliet 2 but the film got delayed due to some reasons. Mukhtiar Chadha marks the directorial debut of the stylish ‘DirectorGifty’ who is famous for making some very stylish music videos for singers as well as few blockbusters in Bollywood. Also Gifty and Diljit Dosanjh have together written the story and screenplay for the film. The film looks stylish in parts since its being directed by Gifty but the story is just like if not similar to the previous films of Diljit. However, lets analyse what DirectorGifty has to offer to the audiences of Punjab in his debut.
To begin with, the story and screenplay has been penned by Diljit Dosanjh himself alongside DirectorGifty. Firstly, the storyline has been kept pretty simple – A hero, A Heroine, A local don, A PLOT (pun), they both confront in the end and you get no prize for guessing who wins in the end. The screenplay has been kept tight in some parts and haywire in others. Some of the sequences seem to be going over the top but this is not what the audiences expect when they go to watch a Diljit Dosanjh film. Dialogues are penned by Manoj Sabharwal and believe me there are some great dialogues in the film. Dialogues are certainly a highlight in this film.
Coming to direction, DirectorGifty also known as Chetan Parwana makes his debut in films. Gifty has proved himself how stylish he can be with his numerous music videos but a 2 hour long film is different from a 4-5 minute long video. Gifty hasn’t been able to take proper control of the film and it is evident from a few sequences and songs which could have been done away with. Also the director hasn’t been able to maintain the interest of the audience for complete 2 hours. 40 minutes into the film you start to feel the hang of it and start getting bored. And the 2nd half plays the villain here. Its terrible in the 2nd half barring 2-3 sequences.
K. Ganesh’s action sequences were impressive especially the one’s in the climax. The one’s in the first half were unwanted but since it’s a film and you cannot question the logic of an action sequence. Also the action sequence and the plot of that sequence was very similar to Diljit’s song – Kharku from Back 2 Basics. Co-incidentally that video featured Oshin and was made by Gifty. Also VikCee’s camera work was neat and he captured the city of Delhi brilliantly.
Coming to the performances, Diljit Dosanjh is a ROCKSTAR. He has that capability in him to even make the dead people laugh. Right from Scene 1 to the last scene, the film belonged to him. No comparisons between him and the other actors of Punjabi Cinema. He is just brilliant. His pronunciation in the film of a Delhi based Sikh and his command over the language was commendable. For those who don’t know – Sikhs in Delhi have a different style of Punjabi accent and Diljit mastered that with ease. Oshin Brar who made her debut with Shareek, fails to impress yet again. She just couldn’t fit into the role of a Delhi based Punjabi girl, Dimple Sharma. Hoping that she improves her acting skills in the films to come.
Yashpal Sharma as the local don did a good job. It would’ve been better had his dialogues were in Punjabi. He spoke hindi throughout the film. Although he’s not a Punjabi, but given his award winning performance in Jatt James Bond and the class actor he is, he could have done even better had he spoken Punjabi. He would’ve been even funnier than he was in the film. Also Kiran Juneja and Khayali did good job in supporting roles. The actors who played Diljit’s friends were all good in their roles especially the one who enacted Laden towards the end. Also the guy who played his Mama was brilliant. But sadly all these performances couldn’t save the film. I think this film proves that only star power and good acting can’t make a film look good. There has to be a good storyline to make a good film.
Music of the film isn’t good at all except the romantic track Main Deewani by Nooran Sisters. The disappointing music comes as a surprise to me since it has names like Diljit Dosanjh, JSL Singh, Ikka and few more in the album.
Finaly Say: All in all Mukhtiar Chadha with a poor story is a waste of time. An exemplary Diljit Dosanjh performance goes in waste, as even he couldn’t save Chadha Ji’s scooter from getting punctured. The movie can be skipped.
