Munda Hi Chahida Movie Review
'Munda Hi Chahida' addresses our society's unfair and uncalled for desire of expecting women to deliver a male child every time they conceive. Without wasting much time, the movie makes its intentions clear on the silver screen. The opening scene witnesses Durga (Raj Dhaliwal) collecting donation to organize Sarbjit Cheema's live show for ladies.
Her door to door campaign brings her to Dharmender's (Harish Verma) house. It is in the first scene itself that audiences get to know about his frustration of being surrounded by women. The presence of a grandmother (Jatinder Kaur), wife Rani (Rubina Bajwa), four sisters, two daughters and one female boss constantly give a hard time to him.
Other than continually throwing jibes at Dharmender for not giving her a grandson, what the demanding grandmother also does to fulfill her crave is not let Dharmendra's youngest sister (Mahak Sharma) to keep a ponytail or wear a salwar-kameez. Imagine that!
Direction and writing
Continuous taunts from people around Dharmender further add fuel to the fire. While things are perfectly set up for more damage, debutant directors Santosh Subash Thite and Deepak Thaper miss a trick by avoiding the damage. Thite, who has also written the script and screenplay of the movie, falters with the latter in the first half.
Perhaps, it is the contagious act of playing safe which make the makers add a couple of imposed special appearances songs in the first half.
But hold on, the movie has a lot more to it. Post the interval, the movie finds both pace and direction which takes its graph away from the axes. Both Thite's script and screenplay improve drastically, adding immense value to what the movie was slated to deliver initially.
In a facet which is rare in Punjabi movies, Thite and Thaper put on display unforeseen sequences which put you in awe of the movie in the second half. My observation in the trailer review might have gone for a toss but its replacement had it in it to be gleefully appreciated. The incontestable nature of the aforesaid calls for an exemplary directorial debut.
Acting
It wouldn't be wrong to say that Harish Verma has delivered one of his finest-ever performances. It was fulfilling watching Verma doing what he is widely known for. With his character having depth on paper, him showcasing the same on-screen calls for applauds.
Much of Verma's success also goes to Thite who had added various shades to his character and costume designer Nitasha Bhateja who made him look like an archetype man going through a lot at home.
While Rubina Bajwa was fairly good, one believes her character should have received more length. Depending on the situation in the movie, veteran actress Jatinder Kaur was both comic and rigid. Samuel John playing the role of Dharmender's father was a hard pill to swallow in the beginning. Rahul Jungral, who played the role of an astrologer in the movie, was another highlight of the movie contributing a lot even in his limited role.
Music
Munda Hi Chahida comprises of four songs in a movie. The music of the movie is above average but not the one which one would brag about. Albeit needless, 'Jattan De Dimaag Ghum Gye' (sung by Jordan Sandhu, written by Kaptaan and musically directed by Gurmoh) will go down as the best song in the movie.
Final verdict
In what is a no-nonsense movie, Munda Hi Chahida has it in it to be watched at least once in the cinema halls. While many movies aim at giving social messages, the manner in which it is delivered is what separates them. It is this part of Munda Hi Chahida which gives it an edge over other movies.
If you thinking that the second half has been praised and not discussed, it is primary to give away anything to you. Not wanting to sound repetitive but the movie will compel you to expect the unexpected!
