Punjabi actress Neeru Bajwa has announced that her film Thaapi will no longer be screened in cinemas from tomorrow, expressing solidarity with Punjab amid growing demands for justice in the case involving anti-drug activist Parvinder Jhota.
In a Facebook post, Bajwa said her team had decided to put the film’s theatrical run on hold, emphasising that Punjab and its people mattered more than the release of a movie.
Reflecting on her connection with the state, the actress said that whatever she and her team had achieved was rooted in Punjab and the spirit of Punjabiyat. She explained that one of the intentions behind making Thaapi was to see renewed vibrancy across the region.
Bajwa also stressed that cinema exists for the people and cannot take precedence over their concerns. Referring to the prevailing situation in Punjab, she said the decision to suspend screenings had been taken because nothing was more important to the team than the state and its people.
The announcement comes amid demands for justice in the case concerning Parvinder Jhota, an anti-drug activist whose death has drawn attention and prompted calls for accountability. Bajwa’s statement places her film team’s decision within the wider context of the ongoing public concern surrounding the case.
The actress did not announce a date for the film’s return to theatres. Instead, she said Thaapi would remain off screens until the situation in Punjab improved.
Reaffirming her team’s connection with the state, Bajwa said they had stood with Punjab in the past and would continue to do so. Her announcement signals a pause in the film’s theatrical release as the demand for justice for Jhota remains in focus.
