Just days after the Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Sardaar Ji 3 was barred from releasing in India, another major Punjabi film — Chal Mera Putt 4 — has now been denied clearance for theatrical release in the country. The decision comes amid growing concerns over the film’s inclusion of Pakistani actors.
Headlined by Amrinder Gill, Chal Mera Putt 4 is the latest installment in the popular cross-border comedy series that previously gained appreciation for its themes of friendship and immigrant struggles. However, the fourth part will not see the light of day in Indian cinemas due to the presence of Pakistani actors like Iftikhar Thakur, Akram Udaas, and Nasir Chinyoti in pivotal roles.
The controversy primarily stems from past remarks made by Iftikhar Thakur, who issued inflammatory statements amid India-Pakistan tensions. In a viral video, Thakur had said: “If you'll come by air, you'll be bombed; if you'll come by sea, you'll be drowned; and if you'll come by ground, you'll be buried under.”
The remarks, perceived as hostile and provocative, have triggered public and political backlash in India, with many questioning why actors who make anti-India comments should be allowed to participate in Indian cinema projects.
Thakur has also made controversial statements against the Indian film industry, claiming: “Indian films, including Punjabi ones, can't succeed without our participation. India cannot give hits without us.”
These statements have fueled a larger debate on cultural collaboration between India and Pakistan, especially in the wake of rising geopolitical tensions.
With the film now blocked from releasing in Indian theatres, fans of the franchise and the lead actor will have to rely on international screenings or digital platforms to catch the much-awaited sequel.
