Nushrratt Bharuccha’s Visit to Ujjain Temple Triggers Religious Dispute

Actor Nushrratt Bharuccha became the focus of a nationwide debate in early January 2026 following her visit to the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, an event that later snowballed into a religious controversy.

The actor had visited the historic shrine on December 30, 2025, just days before the New Year. During her visit, she participated in the early-morning Bhasma Aarti, offered prayers, applied a ceremonial tika and poured holy water at the temple. It was her second visit to Mahakaleshwar, and photographs and videos from the occasion soon spread widely across social media platforms.

The controversy erupted when Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, National President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, publicly objected to her participation in Hindu rituals. Calling the act contrary to Islamic principles, he issued a fatwa stating that her actions amounted to a serious religious transgression under Sharia law. He urged the actor to seek forgiveness through repentance, recitation of prayers and reaffirmation of faith.

The statement sparked sharp reactions online, with many users questioning the relevance of issuing such edicts over personal expressions of faith. Critics described the remarks as an attempt to police individual beliefs and practices.

Nushrratt Bharuccha, who belongs to the Dawoodi Bohra community, has in the past spoken openly about her inclusive outlook on spirituality. She has said that she finds comfort and peace in places of worship across religions, including temples, mosques and churches.

Meanwhile, religious figures and saints in Ujjain came out in support of the actor, defending her right to visit the temple. They said her presence at Mahakaleshwar reflected India’s long-standing tradition of cultural harmony and mutual respect among faiths, often described as Ganga-Jamuna Tehzeeb.

As discussions continue, the episode has reignited broader conversations around religious identity, personal freedom and coexistence in a diverse society.
