Locals argue that the film, starring Ranveer Singh, draws heavily from Lyari’s identity, culture, and socio-economic realities. As a result, they believe the community deserves financial recognition for indirectly contributing to the film’s success.
Videos circulating on social media show residents voicing their concerns over the area’s underdeveloped infrastructure. Many highlighted poor road conditions and lack of basic amenities, suggesting that a significant portion of the film’s profits should be directed towards improving living standards in Lyari.
Some residents proposed that as much as 70 to 80 per cent of the film’s earnings be allocated for development projects. Others stressed that even a partial share could help address long-standing civic issues in the locality.
The demand appears to stem from a broader frustration over perceived neglect, with locals pointing out that despite international funding and assistance received by Pakistan, areas like Lyari continue to struggle with basic infrastructure challenges.
While there has been no official response from the film’s makers or director Aditya Dhar, the unusual appeal has sparked debate online about the extent to which real-life locations or communities can claim a stake in cinematic portrayals.
As discussions continue, the situation highlights the growing intersection between popular culture and social expectations, particularly when films draw inspiration from real-world settings.
