Comparisons are always laid in any film industry whenever any big film is about to release. Punjabi Cinema now faces one such situation. Sequel to the biggest hit of Punjabi Cinema is about to release in 7-8 days time worldwide. Jatt & Juliet released last year on June 29th and collected over `16 Crores worldwide. Now when Jatt & Juliet 2 is up for release on the same weekend (June 28th), Industry insiders and general public are all asking the same thing – Will it be able to match its predecessor?
Punjabi Cinema doesn’t have a pleasant history of sequels unlike Hollywood and now even Bollywood. As far as I know, just one film has had a sequel/franchise and that is Yaaran Naal Bahaaran. Unfortunately, the sequel of that film was a disaster. Although that film had separate issues but we will not get into that. The main point here is Jatt & Juliet 2. Cast & Crew: The core team of J&J and J&J 2 is all the same. Be it the lead actors, director, producers, DOP, music directors, storywriter or even the lyricists. Infact the addition of a few members like Jenny Ghottra, Bharti Singh and others to the cast in the sequel only adds more star value on paper. Retaining the cast & crew from the original film sometimes becomes very essential for the makers and here they have done just the right thing.

Music: The maestro, Jatinder Shah, composes Music for J&J 2, which has been a vital part of Punjabi films from a very long and also played a great part in the success of Jatt & Juliet. Although J&J 2 has some peppy numbers to its credit like Shoulder, Mr. Singh and Punjab Police but if I compare the album to the earlier part, that has an edge over this one. Tracks like Fatto, Hi fi Juliet and moreover Pooja Kiven Aa are still hummable but these ones except for Shoulder don’t seem to have legs to run that much.

First Look/Trailer: The trailer for any film creates an impression in the minds of the viewer. 75% of the viewership for a film depends upon the first trailer that is released. J&J generated a lot of buzz last year and people really liked the trailer, which reflected the chemistry between the lead pair. Even this time around, the trailer focuses on the chemistry between Diljit & Neeru, instead of revealing anything from the real plot. Although this time the trailer also has space for Shampy’s character which became a rage in J&J. The trailer has done its trick for J&J 2, now its time for real action in 8 days time.

Posters: The poster of a film has an impact on the viewers, although not as big as the trailer but it has an impact. 8-10 posters are prepared for J&J 2 and same was the case with J&J. Here what I feel is that the posters for J&J were far better than what J&J 2 has to offer. No experiments have been done in case of posters. Posters for the earlier film were far more attractive than this one.

Ground Promotions (India): Last Year, Speed Records left no stone unturned for the promotions of Jatt & Juliet in North India. However, this time they have followed a different approach for the promotions. Their main focus has been the overseas audience this time around. They have kept just 9 days for India promotions in which they will visit a few cities of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi and will also host a Premier, a day before the films release.
9 days of promotions is enough and it will cover a minor chunk of the audiences but not to forget that Punjab has over 90 cities and covering these 5-7 major cities will not help the makers enough. Last year Live musical shows were organized and were telecasted on television to cover a larger audience.
However, not such things have been planned this time around. The makers are relying more on the brand name, the earlier film created. Agreed that the franchise has an established brand name and people are awaiting this film, but still nothing in this world should be taken for granted.

Final Say: Jatt & Juliet was way ahead of all the 5 aspects, which I feel are essential for any film. But still Jatt & Juliet 2 has its own merits and I am very excited to watch the film. Posters as I wrote do not matter much but the music isn’t as great as the earlier installment. It is missing a Pooja Kiven Aa and a Fatto. Similar tracks like those could have given a great booster for the film.
