An alleged video of Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film “Maha Valmiki” has sparked controversy in Amritsar, with members of the Valmiki community staging a protest against what they claim is a misrepresentation of their revered figure, Bhagwan Valmiki.
The Adi Valmiki Ambedkar Sangathan led the protest on Tuesday, submitting a memorandum to the city commissioner demanding immediate action. Protesters alleged that the film’s trailer, recently released online, portrays Lord Valmiki in a distorted manner, deeply hurting the sentiments of their community.

Sumit Kali, a prominent voice from the organization, told reporters that the way Lord Valmiki has been depicted in the trailer is factually incorrect and offensive. “This is not just creative liberty; it is an attack on our faith and history. We demand that the trailer be removed from YouTube, and the film should not be allowed to release,” he stated.
He further urged the authorities to ban the movie outright, warning of intensified protests if their demands are ignored.
Call for Representation and Censorship Reform
The protesting leaders also raised a broader issue — the lack of representation of the Valmiki community in the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). They argued that had their voices been part of the review process, such inaccuracies could have been avoided.
“There should be members from the Valmiki society in the censor board. We want structural changes to prevent such cultural disrespect in future cinema,” said another protester.
